Half shaft oil seal removal ?

I dont have the direct link to hand but Ashcroft certainly mention removing the half shafts oil seal if you're fitting flanges with screw on caps. I assume someone here has done just that? Any feedback on the results? The reason I ask is that I went to replace the half shafts today and one...

Half shaft seals failing repeatedly Discovery 2

I am trying to tackle a leaky front half shaft/axle seal. I can see all the previous posts about this well known trouble spot. The disco 2 I have had new front seals installed a year or two prior by the previous owner. I disassembled it today and can see the seal looks to be in new condition and...

P38A Front Crankshaft Oil Seal Speedi Sleeve

In an attempt to stop the oil leak I've got at my front crankshaft oil seal, I fitted a Speedi Sleeve shaft repair sleeve to my crankshaft pulley today. If anyone else is suffering constant leaks from the front of the engine, maybe this will sort i for you. It's too early to say if it's a long...

Disco 2 Front hub/axle seal leaking

interesting, so the ID of the seal should be a little larger than the od of the shaft? how will it seal then?

Disco 2 Front hub/axle seal leaking

measure the seal's ID and the shaft's OD with caliper... if the seal is not at least 0.5mm larger it will fail in no time...they messed up these seals at a time and after a half a dozen of them failed on mine(genuine included) i got the shaft machined down with 0.5mm and it's been OK since with...

Half shaft seals failing repeatedly Discovery 2

TBH I don't think that measuring the inside diameter of a seal is much use, apart from telling you that it isn't too big! The spring you can see around the lip of the seal is there to hold the seal tight to the shaft, "but not too much". So you'd expect it to give to accomodate the shaft...

    Rear Axle Oil Leak

If leaking on the outside only as said by garage it will be either the rubber/plastic end cap or the gasket between drive flange and hub. Yours will be like mine [ a 1990 truck] where oil from the diff migrates along the half shaft and lubricates the drive splines and hub bearings. Later models...

    Defender 110 running gear refurb.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned the flanges, as it was the shafts that were the issue - I had done the "cheap fix" of the flanges the year before and it made a total of "zero" difference! : ) I understand that its normally the flanges that go before the shaft, but, i guess, someone...

    Bearing or no bearing?

02 TD5 is there a bearing somewhere in the swivel/ stub axle? Looking from the back of it I can see the seal for the half shaft but you can rattle the halfshaft around willy nilly. Apart from the wheel bearings is there another bearing or does the halfshaft get held it place by the diff and just...

    Santana 2500 Leaking front axle

The seal sits inside the axle tube so swivel oil can get to flange and leak if gasket failed / nuts loose if seal has gone or the seal land on half shaft worn then oil will pass from axle towards flange and swivel

Freelander 2 (LR2) 50 MPH vibration and drone

The RH drive shaft goes right through the PTU, and into the front diff housed inside the gearbox. The LD drive shaft goes into the other side of the front diff, on the LH side of the box. The output bearing often has a small amount of play at the CV joint. If the oil seal is leaking, then...

Series 2 Broke my rear differential

question, Im going to get my yearly road worthiness test done today. So I am just about to put the transmission brake drum back on with the rear drive shaft and both half shafts removed. What are the chances I burn up a wheel bearing with not having gear oil in the differential. I know it...

Is it always like this ?

The challenges of Land Rover ownership are coming back to me. I had a Series 2a a while back, but now have 1986 Defender 90 SW. I had planned to replace the R380 gearbox oil a few weekends ago, but didn't have a spanner big enough, or a new copper seal, so I bought the bits and planned to do it...

    front axle diff oil.

Theoretically, no. There's a seal at the joint where the swivel ball attached that seals on a collar on the half shaft. This prevents the swivel filling up when traversing side slopes. Often removed or ignored. Which is fine if you don't go on side slopes.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Moved the RHD P38 to the barn to prep it for the MOT. Not happy to find a leaking half shaft seal on the front offside. Even less happy to find a crack in the sump in pretty much the same place as a crack in the sump of my LHD P38. I thought the crack on the LHD was due to abuse but perhaps...

    P38A Leaky axle seal woes

If the area the seal runs on is pitted or worn then new seals won't last long. Consider using a speedisleeve to restore the area on the half shaft. Very clever little gizmos & I've used a few. www.skf.com/uk/products/industrial-seals/power-transmission-seals/wear-sleeves/skf-speedi-sleeve

    Absent rear diff breather??

During routine nosy around contemplating tyre swap and I noticed juice staining from rear offside drum, whipped wheel and drum off - yep half shaft seal leaking. Before replacing said seal and shoes I went to check the breather is clear and working - but it is not there! No plug, no broken off...
