Why do you want your fan to kick in? Maybe it´s not getting hot enough for the ECU to switch on the fan. And why do you think the head gasket has gone? Is the oil milky? Was there sludge in the coolant you just drained? BTW.... my fan doesn´t kick in either, but the temp gauge never gets...

I swapped the hoses today on my W reg 1.8, to the ones with the remote thermostat (getting the old one off was an absolute nightmare!). I followed the instructions to the letter, blowing down the valve thing & bleeding from the coolant rail and the heater hose. Now a couple of questions...

Well it´s fixed and I drove back to the UK without any further problems. It turned out to be the distributor cap/rotor arm (something had fallen out of the cap). They also fitted a new set of spark plugs. Here´s a tip for you - if you ever go to Spain in your car take a spare set of spark...

Nope - oil and coolant levels are the same as when I left the UK, and no gunk under the filler cap.

Oh, that's ok then - I thought it might be something serious!!:D I'll take it to my local garage today and get them to lift it off the ground and have a look. If there's nothing obvious I'll get them to take the rear prop off and see if that helps.
