Disco 2 purchase

So everyone

Before I lay out some cash or a wedge of it, what do I need to look for when seeing / buying a discovery...

Im torn between spending 6k on a 2000 X Reg with 26 000 - Diesal or 10K on 2004 - 04 plate with about 64 k

The only real requirement is something with reasonable mileage, as any diesal under 65k to me is still a virgin

Check air suspension for leaks, both my bags leaked on the 04 i just bought, also look for leaky sunroofs, and leaking fuel pressure regulators.

also look at wheel bearings starter fuel pump abs all costy repairs but we love them

and keep close eye out for 3 amigos - long test drive with plenty of brakes use and several engine restarts.

i would go with the 04 plate. 26K on an X plate to me is a bit low for it's age (in that it could show up a few of the usual nasties i.e. head gasket due to plastic dowl's in the head, oil in loom etc)

Go for the newer model. Land rover sorted a lot of the niggles out by then, but still do all the checks. If it's a high spec ES you need to make sure the toys all work, and only buy one with a full service history at these prices. I would also expect a 3-6 month warranty with the later model.

Hummmmmmm Being put off a bit by this three Amigos stuff and some other posts ive been reading....Reliability seems to be a big issue with Land Rovers... and thats whats putting me off.....yeh great cost of parts and all that... but its the cost of getting it fixed every time something goes wrong... having deep pockets is one thing but a continuous money pit, I dont

I dunno what to do now... do I splash the cash take a chance and hope I have trouble free motoring with a disco or just buy a normal car..lol

I have access to a compnay car most of the time, but there are times I like to use my own car.
When we had the last load of snow a 4x4 would have been great, would have saved me walking 6 miles to work everyday.. but then on the own side I know that if I do buy a 4x4 then ppl will take advantage of this fact and I'll just be used as a fecking taxi service

What to do ????????????????????????????

Every vehicle has it's share of problems... Yes the D2 Has it's common issues....but what doesn't?! I've had my D2 for just over a year, it's a '99, had a few problems with the ABS....but all in all it's been great.
I've done some of the maintenance to it myself (And with Thanks to Urban Panzer!

) and tbh I wouldnt get shot of it for anything else!

It's like anything, You can spend money and it goes wrong...that's the gamble you take. But obviously if you buy a 'Good'un' in the first place you're less likely to go wrong

Good luck with whatever you choose anyway!

Agreed, 26K does seem a little low....people tend to buy Diesels and rack up the miles a bit more than veee 8's, but hey I guess there are allways going to be low milers out there.

10K for the '04 does sound a little on the steep side...but then maybe it's just me?

1. Ignore other people and their needs!!!

2. Do you tow heavy trailers or a caravan? Yes/no

3. Do you want to go off-roading? Yes/no

4. Do you want a vehicle that does more that thirty mpg? Yes/no

5. Do you enjoy driving briskly? Yes/no

6. Do you enjoy working on cars? Yes/no

If you answered all the blue answers, think about buying a Disco, if you answered all the red answers, A Disco is likely to frustrate you and cost you money.

Buying a Disco or any 4x4 is not a rational choice if it is to be used predominently a just a family car. If you are looking for a hobby as well, go for a Disco.

Bear in mind that all forums are full of problem pages, very few write in to say how wonderful and reliable their Disco is.

I bought a 2002 TD5 ES and I love it, marvelous long distance cruiser, wonderful tow-car, wonderful off-road, crâp in town. Nuff said ??
