Hi all.

Landy amateur seeks help!

I've had a disco 300tdi for a little over a year.

she's a dirty R reg on 134000k. I had to patch the rear arches a bit, the boot floor and the inner front wings to get it through last year's MOT. (I'm a fabricator welder of 16 yrs experience with my own family business so this isn't an issue) A couple of months ago I had a new head gasket on and to be honest the engine runs as sweet as a nut.

My landy has today failed an mot in a major way. both front inner wings are shot, as are both rear inner, both rear outer arches might as well go too, boot floor and rear cross members. It also has advisories on all four springs being corroded, along with a load of corrosion on the brake hoses.

Now, my business was hit hard over the past two years through the recession so I'm skint. I want to keep the landy as i tow a lot for work as well as use it as a plaything as I'm into climbing and mountaineering all year round so it's excellent around Snowdonia in winter. If I had the wedge I'd buy a 110 defender, but i don't.

Now, I'm considering stripping the bitch and replacing all the shot panels, also getting a 2 inch lift kit seeing as the springs and brake hoses will need doing at some point in the near future. If I'm going to bother with it, I'll be doing it properly and want some use out of it both for work and also a bit of greenlaning.

I'm having it up on the ramp at my local garage and he's going to run through the severity of it but as he knows my business he thinks I could sort it all out should I wish to. I know little about cars in all honesty but am well aware that all of this is standard trouble for a disco. (I'm something of a lurker on this site but don't contribute) He tells me that the chassis is absolutely fine, which was my main concern. So, given the chassis and engine are fine, I'm tempted to have a dabble.

So, after all that waffle, my question is, is it worth doing this and is it doable for an engineer that doesn't know a great deal about cars?

Staffordshire 4x4 are just a couple of minutes away from me so I may be able to get a bit of advice from them on the off road mods.

Am I better off saving for a battered 110 or does it sound like it's worth spending 400 odd quid reviving it?

Thanks for reading my inane drivel!

Yours skint and panickingly!

Steve Lockett.

Hi Steve, I do understand about skint and Land Rover ownership, they tend to go hand in hand !!

Only you can decide if it's worth spending £400 to repair your Disco, but if you are handy with a welder I would have thought you could do the body repairs for a lot less?

Boot floor £50; boot floor crossmembers £18 apiece x2; new rear arches £20 x2; new front inner wing repair panels £20 x2.

See YRM metals as well as others: Discovery

your going to need a good few grand for decent defender ,but since you have the skills you could strip body out a make real job of it as its labour that would be the biggest part in that job ,most parts can be fabricated

the body is only welding , the brake pipes aint a big job , replace pipes and bleed it through... you can buy the copper pipe , fittings and a flaring tool on ebay.... use google to fing videos on how to use the flaing tool to flare the pipe ends.... spring replacement is an easy job, if you buy another cheep disco youll be spending more initially and could have similar issues at mot time.

Well, I'd been sniffing around defenders for a while and I've gone and bought myself a 110 200tdi. I was offered a good price in part ex for mine against a fender so I took it.

My Disco is going tomorrow.

I have just replaced the inner arches at the rear and it’s an easy job and they are cheap at under £50 for the pair, and today I welded up my boot floor on both sides after cutting the rot out. I have the A posts to sort tomorrow as they are both rotten at the base.

My MOT is next Tues so my fingers are crossed but I to expect 1 or 2 brake pipes to fail.

My 2” lift kit cost me £150 plus VAT from island 4x4 and that only took a day to fit and I am well pleased with it.

So go for it and like me you can save a fortune on the labour costs and enjoy your Disco.
