A recent intermittant fault has been occuring with my TD4.
About a month ago my TD4 refused to start 1st time ...
From cold the engine failed to turn but a click was heard (solonoid working) Glow plug light came on as usual and went out after a few seconds (normal)
Second attempt made to start but no joy...same thing happened.
On the third attempt the engine turned over slowly, without firing up,for a few turns then stopped, as if battery was low...in fact battery was found to be with plenty of charge.
On the 4th attempt engine turned over and started as it should. Ran as normal with no further starting problem...However next day or even a few days later same thing happens.

This problem has occured on several occations with no obvious pattern or cause...always from cold start, ie left overnight ,or for several hours during the day.

I suspect a sticking or faulty starter motor...
Can anyone shed any further light on this problem?

I'd start by checking the single spade connection on the solenoid. Make sure it's clean and grips well, sometimes pulling it off and on a few times is all it takes to sort it.
Also the same with battery terminals, remove clean with a bit of emery paper and refit. The positive terminal particularly can get a build up of black scale so make sure its clean.

Starter motor would be last resort after a battery drop test proved the battery was ok.

Chaser.

Single spade connector on solonoid...
Could this have been disturbed during the clutch replacement carried out recently ?(July '08)

It's just something to always check before changing anything expensive. this connection can give trouble on any car it's not specifically a freelander fault they just get a bit corroded after a few years.

Wack the solenoid wiff a hammer un try again if it starts then its gonna be yer starter motor [all in one] but my money is on the battery if its a doozle as it takes a great load with glow plugs and starting [glow plugs] do kick in more this time of year. . . . . . .

Started no problem this morning, even though it's frosty...
Can't imagine it's the battery as cold weather usually reduces the battery power...

Worrying metalic click/crack noise eminating from under the car. This can be heard as the car comes to a halt after reversing off driveway (short distance of a few metres) and again on pulling forward. Just the one sound, not repeated, as if something has moved/shifted and back again on change of direction.

exactly the same problem with my car RAC guy told me its to with starter motor. But as it starts second or third time for the moment am not worried. Will take it to sort out though eventually!
