Disco 2 Dash lights problem

Quick question please,
Is the odometer backlight on all the time the ignition is on and is it supposed to dim when the sidelights are switched on ???
Part of the reason i ask is the bulb has 3 wire "elaments" in it

Thank you, that probley explanes why you can't replace bulb with a l.e.d one then.
