I have read various posts and apparently early TD5s didn't have a catalytic converter. Mine is a 2000 10P engine and the paperwork states there is a catalytic converter. However, lots of posts on the web claim pre 2001 vehicles didn't.

It is an LHD model which I believe was originally sold to either France or Poland. Is it possible to check from the VIN number somehow?

So I've taken pictures...is the silver mesh thing the catalytic converter? I presume the mid section box is just a silencer, is that right?

The silver mesh thing is just a flexible joint. If there;'s a catalytic converter it would be on the L shaped pipe that goes from the manifold to the joint just forward of the big silencer. However, I think you've had a new exhaust at some point so it's anybody's guess. It'll look like a small silencer on the horizontal section of that L shaped pipe.

So the answer is.....
yours hasn't got one.....
yours doesn't need one.....
win win!!!:):):):)
(Mines a MY2000 and doesn't have one either!)

CAT fitted after 2002 update. Although it's a DPF really, not a catalytic converter.

l am told that a post 2002 TD5 is capable of passing the MOT without one fitted, as the engine is very "clean".

I think you are wrong there, land rovers did not get DPFs until about 2007 when they went to Euro4, before then tdi td5 if fitted/specced had a DOC.
