Td4 se FL fuel economy

Hi guys

I have just got myself a 2005 FL td4 se 3dr and have a quick question regarding fuel economy.

When I purchased it earlier it was on just over quarter of a tank, I have then driven roughly 50 miles home and have used up all the fuel and am now on the red.

Is it normal to go through this much fuel in 50 or so miles, that would mean a full tank would be 200ish miles. I was driving mostly on the motorway between 65 and 70mph.

If this isn't normal is there a known issue that causes this kind of low fuel economy?

with the fl1 td4 .. to gauge mpg ..
you need to fill right up .. drive a few hundred miles .. repeat fill
do calc.
as the fuel gauge can be fairly inaccurate ..
like it can be steady .. then drop like a stone
and .. i had the tank-cradle changed .. after which
the fuel gauge adopted a tad different behaviour ..

i.e. the fuel gauge aint the best source of mpg info ..

the fl1 td4 manual [ in stock tune ] .. should get 40 mpg .. aprox.

Normal. For some reason, when the gauge shows 1/4, there's only a couple of gallons left in the tank.

You will find that if you fully fill the tank, the gauge won't move for the first 100 miles, then it'll slowly go down to the 1/4 point, before dropping quickly.

When I bought my freelander I took it straight from the seller to a petrol station and filled it up. On the 150 mile journey home I was well pleased when after 100 miles I had only used a quarter of a tank. The last 50 miles though, saw the guage drop to nearly a quarter full. They are not a great indication of how many miles of fuel left, you get used to it though.

A full tank gets me 420-440 mostly motorway miles, and not really a great deal less around the doors before the light comes on. That is around 60 litres, IIRC. If you find out you do have very bad fuel economy, then check for binding brakes, and a properly functioning turbo as two major culprits of poor fuel figures. Less likely would be fuel leaks from the tank and related pipework.

Hi, my 04 TD4 auto does about 420 miles on a tank mainly on A or B roads( no journeys below 20 miles) it also has a synergy 2A box with eco switch which improves economy by about 7-10%. Make sure the thermostat is operating correctly, if it's stuck open this doesn't help economy, the temp. gauge should get up to just under half way within 4 or 5 miles & the heater should be kicking out hot air. Has the air filter been checked/changed?

Hi paul99, I noticed like me, you manage to get 60litres in yours, the owners manual quotes the tank capacity as 55 litres do you think this is only down to the light coming on?

Pretty much, yes. Although fuel tank capacity given by manufacturers is usually only a close estimate, in my experience.

Just a thought. You didn't say if it was an auto or manual.
The manual will do about 37Mpg, the auto is more like 29Mpg, hope this helps.
