Buying advice please.

So ive bought old land rovers in the past including my current 300tdi cracking on 216k miles. well I’ve spotted a 09 plate defender 67,000 miles for sale it’s spotless underneath no welding at all not even I sign of rust, the bulkhead is solid no rust on that or any signs of rust anywhere. The Body panels are straight with no dents or even a scratch on the paint. Very well cared for truck like it’s straight out the show room inside and out. Now my problem is the price they want £14,000 is that to much? It’s at a dealership that normally sells cars. I’m taking it for a test drive next weekend. I forgot to take a picture of it but any guidance will help.
 
Why not cross reference other trucks for sale within a price range of £11k-£16k and see how it compares. If the £14k is a little toppy you could always use the price comparisons to reduce purchase price... + the dealer will know there are 100's of LRD's for sale at any one time and will hopefully want to bite your hand off for a sensible sale.
 
If you are happy with the car, do not worry to much about the price.

When you pay to much you lose a little money, that is all.
When you pay to little, you can lose everything, as the thing you bought cannot do what you bought it to do.
If you buy the cheapest, you need to add some money as a buffer for when it fails to do what you bough it to do, and if you do that, you might as well have bought the better one in the first place!

They are overpriced vehicles but to get a good one you have to pay but you get it back when you sell.
Spend some cash on the 300tdi and get it looking as good and then keep it.
 
That’s the one about the only newer defender that’s ever really caught my eye. I’ve already got money put back for some much needed work for the 300tdi sound stupid but I’ve found it’s handy having 2 trucks.
 
Have you a link to it gmacz I can’t seem to find it? I spoke to the chap and he didn’t say about vat but I was going to double check when I go back to them.
 
Check that all service recalls have been done, you can do this online if you have the vin. Stick your finger in the coolant header tank to check for oil, the oil coolers had a weakness (easy fix) and the oil can get into the coolant. Emissions equipment is complex and expensive + awkward to fix (EGR, CAT), check for problems in that area. A nanocom will be a wise investment for pinpointing problems if you buy the vehicle, also handy if you can plug one in and read stored faults before buying. In my experience they are a satisfying vehicle to own. £14k seems a fair price as body n chassis condition is everything. There is a plentiful supply of delivery milage take-off spares (and goodies) at sensible money (at fraction of the cost of dealers) as many vehicles have been V8'ed and chelsea tractor'ed from new. You will get intercooler and hose issues at some point, that area is a weakness but again easy to fix. Apart from under the bonnet, the rest of the vehicle is pretty much identical to all other defenders so you will already know what to look for.

Ideal Thankyou for that. The new puma 2.4 engine is new to me so that’s helpful knowing that stuff! I’ll have a good look and may invest in a reader like you said.

These engines are reliant on modern electronics and management systems. Mechanically old hat, but I consider a reader to be an essential part of the tool kit. On the couple of occasions I have needed it, I have found that the engine management systems were ok and doing their job and the problem was physical - same as any old engine. You just need to rethink your way of investigating everyday problems to get to the solutions.
