The P38 Auto does have a Normal/Sport-Mode setting for the gearbox so maybe the dealer was unfamiliar with the marque made a mistake in his description to the OP.
No matter, it is a P38 and they are best model to have. Stick a decent battery in and get some diagnostics on it. She will be fine.
Whatever you do.....NEVER, EVER refer to it as a *EEP on here, calling it a "TRUCK" is borderline acceptable though. ;)
 
@AudioInstigator it's time for some serious honesty : you cannot run these vehs on a less than 100% battery. Never heard of a refurb but if it is indeed as kermit says, then you will be buying another one very, very, very soon. Then another and another.
If you are serious about being so strapped , that you cannot afford a new battery, then sadly, you most probably not in a place for this vehicle
If you are already down on rent, and relying on any LR/RR product for work, out your own pocket, Don't. Most owners have very good recovery cover or another vehicle.
If you cannot do a lot of the work yourself, or cannot afford to pay someone else. Again this is not the time to have this vehicle in your life.
I do not wish to pee on your bonfire but someone has to be honest with you. . The P38 is easier to work on than the L322, but you will need time /money, to work on it, sooner rather than later. The P38 is cheaper to run/maintain than the L322 , but nothing is cheap if you can't really afford it.
I wish you luck , whatever you do with it.

Addit: Actually , if that's how you want it to go, it will. But not for long. So, if you don't want to treat it properly, get all the enjoyment you can, while you can.

@gold rover I'm beginning to think the battery is not the root problem it's just one of them... when you read OP it's keys not the same aftermarket stereo fitted and now he's in there fiddling with wiring... stereo,door locks,window switch pack are all on becm fuse 1 and are notorious circuit for causing problems when messed with...how do we know... months with a customers car who insisted on getting his own parts from his mechanic who sent the car to us cause he couldn't fix it.. we did with help on here...customer hundreds out of pocket due to bad advice but wouldn't listen...

You could be right. But the idea of not even being able to afford a battery, doesn't seem to be the right starting place for owning any green oval :(
