Hi All, I've just been donated a (somewhat neglected) 2001 TD4. Engine sounds sweet enough. I've just serviced it (....once I'd sheared three of the bolts holding the undertray on)! It needs a lot of work, but so far I've done oil & filter, air filter and fuel filter. I've also done the thermostat (which I really didn't enjoy)! Among other things, I've noticed a small bore pipe (like a vacuum hose) that runs from what I think is the EGR valve actuator (a round, pressed steel capsule on the right hand end (as you look under the bonnet) of the engine) to nowhere. The other end of the pipe is just hanging down the front of the engine. Can anyone tell me where it's supposed to go, please?

Yes sounds like the EGR vacuum actuator.
The other end of the pipe is just hanging down the front of the engine.
It should go to the control valve, which is just above the starter, both difficult to see as they're under the inlet manifold.

On a different note.
Don't forget to change the crankcase filter. ;)

Thanks both. I'll have a look down there. And yes, I saw a YouTube video on the crankcase filter last night - never even knew it had one!

Sorted! Thanks both! Also found that the other pipe on there had a big hole in it, so have shortened it and now they're both on properly.

Next problem....

...it appears to have developed a loud hiss on boost. I don't think it was doing this when I first got it, but can't be sure. When I accelerate, there's a pretty loud noise of what sounds like escaping air. Almost as if there was a hole in the intercooler or a split hose, but no black smoke. Are they prone to that sort of thing?

Hissing under boost is most likely down to a split boost hose. Check the elbow pipe at the EGR valve, this is a common pipe to split. Also check all the other pipes for splits, around the clips is the normal place.

Actually, it was a bit more credless than that. It seems that when replacing it after my thermostat change, I didn't put the Jubilee clip on quite square at the EGR end and it was just leaking a bit from there! All good now, and my rear diff mountings replaced too. Starting to feel like a car now! Wheelbearing next!
