how to find reg number with only a vin plate

hi,i had no luck when i searched for a thread on this so can anyone help,just bought a series that has been used for offroading/trials only for years and has no reg or numberplates but has the vin plate,how do i find out the reg that belongs to it or are dvla going to issue me a v5 with vin number only? thanks in advance

Ive got a motorcycle. Im the legal ower, etc. but ive moved house a load of times, and have lost the v5 and the number plate, but have the chassis number etc.

Called the dvla a few years back - maybe i spoke to the wrong person, but they were right unhelpful, and said the best i could do was a Q plate (which is obviously nonsense)

I reckon an HPI check maybe? But im too much of a skintflint to pay for it. Police can do that kind of stuff, but, apparently every database request is logged now, so its not even a question of finding a friendly copper...

DVLA won't tell you ( at least not easily/legitimately), I did it by asking a motor trader, they have pro HPI accounts that give them reg from VIN, consumer ones don't do that. It's hardly the worlds biggest secret as all modern vehicles have vin in the windscreen for anyone to see and match with number plate.
