Gravitex on footwells, battery box, etc

Hi guys,

Got to some Gravitex left and would like to cover the front and back floor of my Landy to reduce the noise when going off-road and having stones hitting the panels and rattling through.

I was thinking to remove the panels, bring them to the paint shop, and have them sprayed with Gravitex to get the orange peel effect.

Is that a good idea ?

I thought that putting gravitex on the side of the floor facing the road would be a good idea, if you think it's not I will find another way of using my spare gravitex

reading online I came across James' website, and as part of his rebuild he states:

'I coated the footwells with Ixell stone chip, this helps cut down on panel noise and adds long term protection to the steel. It can be over painted'

Is this stone chip different from Gravitex hence why it could be used in such a way?

Gravitex will be spot on for what you want to do. I don't think many people know what Gravitex is hence the replies above. It is more or less exactly what car manufacturers spray the underside of their vehicles with. I am going to Gravitex the whole underside of my rear tub to reduce stone noise and to seal it all up. Make sure you prep all panels first so it adheres well.

It will be fine. I've done my bulkhead and footwells with it (not the bits you see obviously) and then painted over it once it's dry. It's the same rubberised coating that manufacturers put on sills etc to protect from stonechip. Upols gravitex is one of the better ones out there also, it'll offer more protection than just a coat of paint for sure!

@Ash2304 How should i treat the bulkhead and the footwells before applying the Gravitex? After cleaning with a degreaser just a clear-up of the old paint with sand-paper at GRIT100 would be sufficient so that the Gravitex would attach well onto the metal/steel/alluminium? Would I need to put etch primer first or go directly with the Gravitex?

Yeah, that would be fine. If I was just painting it I wouldn't go so coarse, but the stonechip will cover everything so you can stonechip over 100's, I would prime first, let it flash off and then stonechip.

Degrease after sanding the paintwork also before applying the etch to bare metal areas. you could even etch, then prime then stonechip.

I thought that etch-primer was one product - how can you etch and then prime?

You can put either high build or wet on wet primer over the top of etch primer. I wouldn't etch prime something and then paint for example. I would etch prime then prime, rub that down and then paint. So you could etch prime first, followed by a coat of primer followed by your stonechip. It would add an extra coat of something as protection.
