Advice needed Evoque P300e cracked hybrid battery casing

Hi, my Evoque P300e is in for a service and the garage has identified damage to the hybrid battery casing. The garage is suggesting that it has been caused by it being hit, presumably quite forcibly. They have also suggested that someone has attempted to repair the crack with some sort of chemical compound (I think the green paint in the photos). The cost for replacing the battery is £10,600.

I am 100% confident that I have not caused the damage, I'm very sure that i would be aware of hitting something which such force that it would crack the very thick casing.

On reviewing the photos, it occurred to me that there is no distortion of the metal casing that would very likely happen if it were hit sufficiently hard to cause the cracks. I'm thinking that it could be a fault in the casting of the casing that was there from new.

The photos show the damage.

Would welcome any thoughts or observations as I start this presumably lengthy debate with RR. They have already said that the battery will take two months to source.

As you say there are no hammer marks, also the edges of those cracks are rounded off so looks like a casting issue to me, although I'm no expert in casting.

How long have you owned it? and how old is it? where did you buy from?

I must admit the way the cracks have a "V" shape to them it looks like somebody has tried to repair.

But its only the casing? why are they quoting for batteries? Or is the second quote a typo?

I've had it from new in September 2021. It is the battery casing but Range Rover Technical have said they can't be sure that there is not internal damage therefore complete battery replacement at £10,600.

As @backinblack mentions the rounded edges to the crack would suggest that this is not caused by a blow but potentially by a manufacturing fault. The dealer has suggested that someone has attempted a repair (as I have owned the car from new I know that it has only been serviced by them), I can't tell for sure in what way from these photos, I will have a closer look when I visit the dealer on Monday.

Still in LR warranty period and proof its only gone to them for servicing.
Think you should push it, shout from the tree tops.

Is the green stuff perhaps a damage/faulty leaking battery? I dont know.

To me those edges look too rounded to have been messed with. I would expect to see grind marks, and IMO you would only grind a V if you intended to weld it.

If it wasn't damaged/repaired by them, it's a manufacturing defect if, that's the case, should be replaced at JLRs expense Not yours IMO.

@DPH , it might be an idea to go on a dedicated ejoke site and see if anyone else has or had the same issue. Harder to argue with cause of fault, if you have evidence of it happening to others.

A picture from further away showing the position its situated in the car might be helpful.
Is it possible someone might have put a jack under it or something?

I would put money on that being a molding fault. There is no sign in the photo's of any impact damage that might have caused the split. The green stuff may have been applied at the factory.
You may need to employ an expert to produce a report.

It's also remarkably clean, is it under a cover or has the car never seen rain

Thanks all for your comments. I did also post on an Evoque forum but didn't receive any replies. I will update you after i visit the dealership on Monday

Good luck, you will need to be very persistant.

If this a manufacturer issue, wouldn't this be picked up during the assembly. As most of the construction of modern vehicles are by robots, cameras and even quality control after..

Most of the construction is done by robots but assembly is mostly done by people.

Do they service the battery case? Where in the car is it?

Has it ever been into a tyre centre for tyres ? We all know how much care they take with torquing wheel nuts & correct tyre pressures so could have been damaged by the pads from a ramp, best of luck.
