Hi, bought a Freelander TD4 (53 plate) early last year as an affordable way onto the landrover ladder.

Nice clean motor, and have had a year of happy motoring. However, in Feb it developed an intermittent starting fault.

Came out one morning and it simply would not start, would turn over but not fire. Called out RAC and they got it started with easy start and thought it could be the glow plugs. I had suspected the plugs needed replacing as it was getting a little sluggish to start, especially with the colder mornings.
Anyway had them replaced, and had a week of happy starting until came out one morning and exactly the same thing; would turn over but not fire.

Local garage that I have used for years, got it started again with easy start and took it to their workshop for assessment. FYI it runs fine once started and starts first time all day. Battery is in good condition.

Garage checked all the usual faults; amps to plugs, injectors, back leak tests, etc. Tried putting a new low pressure fuel pump on which initially didn't do anything, but the next day it started fine and continued to start fine for the next couple of weeks. Problem fixed, or so we thought!

Two weeks after the fuel pump was replaced, the exact same thing happens - refuses to start.

Again started ok with easy start and garage took it away, replacing the wiring to the low fuel pressure sensor. This appears to have done the trick, well initially.....

It now starts but only after 4 attempts; fuel pump kicks in, engine turns over with the turn of the key but still refuses to start - doesn't even attempt to fire, until like I say the 4th/5th turn of the key.

Once started it will run all day with no issues at all.

Garage recommends trying a second hand fuel sensor next.

Anyone have any past experience or knowledge of what could be the cause of the starting issue?

Cheers

Dan

hi mate

firstly may I ask has it been fully serviced , has the crankcase filter been checked, air filter etc etc

did they replace the fuel filter and was the fuel pump a genuine one

has an egr bypass been done, maf removed and cleaned

it should still start even if the glows wernt working,

have they plugged an analiser into it yet and come up with any fault codes plse

happy to help and see if we can pin the problem down for u

Hi Stuart
Was fully serviced in December, air and fuel filters changed. Will come back to you on the fuel pump being genuine. Analyser has showed no faults.
Will check on the egr bypass and maf cleaning.
It is booked in for next week for another attempt, if the above has not been done they could perhaps start there.
Cheers D

no probs ,

hope the garage isn't just changing parts and guessing what the fault is, all the time ur having to pick up the tab

they should be able to identify the fault as that's surely what ur paying them for, lol

the only reason I asked about the fuel pump is the cheap ones can fail

u should here the fuel pump as soon as u put the ignition on

the egr bypass is a kit u can buy and not normally part of a service as its a modification

if when u see them get them to check

crankcase filter is clean
turbo filter is ok
maf is all clean
map sensor is cleaned out

egr is clean and not full of crap , can do the egr bypass another time if u wish

check vaccuum hoses

fuel pump being a genuine one

is there any leaks around the fuel pump, filter etc

the fuel rail wiring has been known to cause an issue , gets water in the connector , they do a repair kit for this

would have thought a faulty fuel rail sensor would show up on a diagnostics machine ?

plse let us know how u get on as hopefully by them going through everything that something will show up causing the bad starting

Only thing garage had not done from your first list was the egr bypass. I have copied your list and will take it with me on Monday. I'll keep you posted.
I can hear the fuel pump when turning the ignition; a low level humming noise (priming?) followed by a constant buzzing (which sounds like a pump does when lifted out of any liquid) this buzzing is constant while driving or stationary too. Never had this noise with the old pump. Raised this with the garage and they said it was just a different brand of pump. Probably cheaper, non genuine, I suspect, cost was £140. I see some genuine pumps at Paddocks are £300.

Hi Stuart, thought I'd update you. Replacement fuel pressure senor was fitted to the Freelander in the week and it did nothing to aid starting. Garage said they have checked all the items you mention above and have cleaned out the EGR value.
I have been in touch with the dealer I bought it from 18months ago to pick their knowledge and, other than the same items on your list, they suggested checking the solenoid valve.
Intermittent starting problem has now turned into sluggish starting every morning or when it has been stud for a few hours. It cranks over and over but refuses to fire. It wont jump start but will bump start every time - so being careful where I park at the moment. I have also noticed when it has started (eventually) from cold, it stutters but then is fine once it is warm. I have been driving to Derby (100miles e/w) one day a week for the past 8 weeks and it has ran fine, except this week when the water pump bearings collapsed.
Although I have just read a tip re a fuse that may have blown to the diesel heater...it cannot be that simple

Think I'll take it to another garage, there is a diesel specialist just done the road. Will keep you posted

u mention its sluggish on starting , is ur battery ok, u should get around 14.4 volts when running

a diesel starts on compression , flow plugs are there to aid starting when cold and also to help emissions , a diesel will start without glow plugs

what standing voltage have u got on ur battery plse

might be the simple case of a bad battery or as op said injectors and may ned another leak back test

have u tried some injector cleaner in ie millers or rhino

will be intersting to see how u get on and please let us know how u get on
