I'm considering buying a Freelander 2, HSE, 2008, i6 3.2 litre petrol with 80,000 miles on the clock for £8000. The price seems too good to be true but everything seems to check out. I have contacted the one previous owner, the garage that has serviced it for the last 6 years and may even consider an RAC check. Am I being overcautious or are there nasty surprises built into 6 year old petrol Freelanders over and above what you might expect from a car in its mid-life and well travelled? Any insider knowledge on this model would be much appreciated. PS I can't afford an auto diesel Freelander of the same spec. Thanks in advance.

It's a volvo engine, reliable, powerful enough, but the high Road tax and higher running costs means that the early petrols bombed in value compared to the more popular and easier to sell diesels. Nothing wrong with them, fancied one myself

Just make sure your pockets are deep enough and that you're on first name terms at your local petrol station

Thanks for the advice teddywood1 and ses88. Fortunately, I'm only doing 4-5000 miles a year, so hopefully won't need to hand over the deeds to the house every time I fill up. Interestingly, the last service flagged up an issue with the drive train which apparently was fixed. But now you mention it I'll delve deeper. Cheers once again.

Do you live in the UK? If so them yer buying the most unpopular Freelander 2 available. Very very few FL2's in the UK with the 3.2 petrol fitted, compared to diesel's. Parts supply and cost could be an issue unless you can cross match to other users of the same engine.

I agree with Hippo. Those i6 are like rocking horse ****, so few of them about.

They drive nice and go really well, but I haven't even seen enough of them to know if they are any good. Probably best read up on Volvo's before making the decision :)

and then buy a diesel Freelander 2 when yer stopped laughing. :pound:

I'm not sure the rocking horse analogy is exactly filling me with confidence. I did call the local LR dealer here in Brighton and he told me that these i6 beasts are rare but easier to service than diesels and quite reliable. That filled me with even more confidence. On the face of it, I think I might just buy a Volvo instead. Then again, that would be missing the point about the joy of owning a Land Rover, and the optimism of the human spirit over inescapable truth. Cheers to all who replied.

sounds great...go for it....you only live once and as far as im concerned its for living...

There's 1482 Freelanders on LR's uk web site for sale.
Only 1 of them is a Freelander 2 petrol 3.2
This is a massive drop from about 3 years ago when there was normally 3, 4 or 5 available on the same site.
They don't sell that many red and blue Freelanders. But after my announcement on ere to ask more peeps to buy them so there's more available in the second hand market later on, for me to choose from, it seems to have happened.
There's currently 175 blue Freelanders available.
There's currently 109 red Freelanders available.
Surprisingly there's 52 green ones anorl.
3 years ago the figures for red and blue would be a third of that so they've become more popular. Green would be less than 10.

Now yer some could say I'm completely mad. Others would say I'm mad from eggperience. But I can't help thinking the chance of finding a red petrol 3.23 is slim. Imagine my surprise when I see the only one available is red.

Your making me feel good about buying my i6 in Tambora Flame, it had LPG which was great because it was my dream car and it came up in a search I was casually running whilst having a cup of coffee, what could I do, I just had to have it, even though it had the HST body styling which made me feel like mutton dressed as lamb and I had just 3 weeks earlier bought a FL2 TD4.
After 200,000 miles in 5 freelander 1s I thought I would try out the FL2 and was won over immediately. I hope you get your FL2 and if you like it half as much as me then you will be delighted. I must admit I still have my LPG V6 FL1 to take off road.
