Erratic revs, erratic throttle & MIL light

Hi all,

Problems today..

Hippo has been fine for ages - drove 12 miles into town, hippo fine, on the way home i was accelerating through 3rd gear, and it felt like it stopped accelerating for a brief moment.. At first i hought it was in my head, but as i came down a hill off throttle, but still in gear, i seemed to be going a lot faster than usual...

I pressed the clutch in, and the revs shot up form just over 2000, upto 3700, stayed about a second or two, then dropped to about 2500 for a second, then went back UP to 3500, then dropped in stages of about 700rpm at a time til it was idling normally again..

I pulled in, revved it, and all seemed fine.. So i continued the last 5 miles or so home..On the way, it either ran no probem at all, or lumpy, like your just about to run out of fuel... Then, it started accelerating itself if left in gear!!! The engine management light blinked on 3 times, for no more than a second a time..

I got home, cant see anything out of place, so started it again and took it around the block - it seems ok, but now when you press the clutch in to change gear,or whey your inneutral and rev it, it revs up completely normally, but takes AGES, and i mean AGES to drop back down to idle speed..

Ive had no other problemslike unusual knocks, rattles or bangs, and there is no smoke coming out of the back at all??
Any suggestion peeps??

I know its probably wrong to assume this, but as i left town, i noticed that i had just under quarter of a tank, so pulled into sainsubys and stuck £40 of diesel in.. Could i have picked upsome dodgy fuel?? And would it cause these problems???

HELP! :(

Hi,

I just changed the IRD on my freelander petrol 2000 reg a few weeks ago and I am getting something similar, upon starting revs to about 2500 and takes an age to drop and when driving upon pressing the clutch to change gear the revs stay high or actually go up to 3000 odd.... I find that if i blip the accelerator pedal it clears the problem for a bit but it comes back. Don't have any idea whats causing this. Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Actually I just tried this from elsewhere in the forum http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/obd-ii-60483.html def reset the idle revs will see how it runs on drive home from work.

Hi all,

Sorry to re open this thread, but what i stated as the original problem in this post has returned again.. since it happened in January i have had no problems.. Then all of a sudden i started it a week ago and it revved itself for about 1/2 a mile then righted itself..

Been fine for 7 days, drove to work fine this morning, started it to drive home, all was well but about 2 miles into my journey the car went beserk revving itself whilst in neutral (anywhere between 1200 - 3500 rpm) or powering itself on when in gear like an unwanted cruise control.

Suggestions anyone? Mrs Newcyboots has a right face on over this cos were driving round france for 3 weeks in november :ballchain:

Hi all,

After a few days of the above problem, it has now corrected itself again... but im paranoid its going to come back now... knowing my luck whilst over in france..

I noticed uyesterday after i took the engine cover off whilst it was revving its nuts off that there was whitish smoke coming out of the fuel injection pump..

With this erratic idling going on, and after immersing myself in the haynes manual, i can only guess that

a) my fuel injection pump is on the way out, or
b) my throttle position sensor is on the way out

Anyone think im going along the right tracks here??

Cos of all this erratic idling since Monday, i booked it in to get it sen this afternoon.. When i got to the garage, he plugged it in and said no fault codes were recorded?? Despite the fact the red engine management light flicked on a couple of times??

He even took it for a 20 minute test drive and then let it idle in the workshop for 20 minutes, but the hippo didnt rev itself once??

Has anyone had anythink like this before, and if you have how did you cure it?
