What's the most resilient Landy engine? (Sorry didn't know where else to put this)

Forgetting power, torque, mpg and so forth, which is the engine that will just keep running forever (with decent servicing of course)?
I've heard the Rover V8 is pretty much bomb proof provided it doesn't overheat.. but then it's a petrol so...?
Thanks

a tidy 3.5 is the best all round for reliability/useability/economy etc.

ok ok diesels are slightly cheaper but v8 is a better drive, ok ok series motor will have less niggles but its awfully slow to drive etc etc.

3.5 is a happy medium on all accounts...

i would say a 200tdi, they always seem to start. v8's sometimes don't want to be woken up on a cold morning but every time i jump into my series tdi, it starts, even when i forget the glowplugs.

true the v8 has more systems to fail and not a great igntion system, but compare how many tdis need stripping down vs how many 3.5s need to be taken apart and i bet the old clunker v8 turns out more mechanically reliable...

plus the tdi isnt an engine its a smoke and noise machine used to turn engine oil black :p

Yeah the V8 I used to have did a wonderful job of converting petrol into noise, but less luck with producing much power along the way :p

Probably tempting fate here, but the 200 in mine is still going strong with no problems since the up day I bought it 10 years ago, 1 puff of smoke on start up, regularly serviced, never thrashed, still pulls well ( up hills ) ( it used to be red but now its blue ) keeps up with todays traffic well.

I've had the chassis fixed, doors replaced etc, etc, but the engine remains untouched.

Watch this space now , got a feeling that has just jinxed it.
