I've just seen some (not really detailed though) of the VOSA changes to the MOT test regarding catalytic converters. I was wondering if any one has any more detail as to how it will affect those of us who have removed the cats or are thinking about (myself as the first project of the year). Do we have to keep them and replace them just for the test? Or does it put the people who make the de-cat pipes out of business? It could get expensive if people have to buy new ones especially on the older cars.

If your vehicle was built with a CAT then it will need one to pass an MOT. Until March 31st it will be an advisory but after that anyone who has fitted a de-CAT will need to remove it and put a CAT back on ... that's what I understand anyway.

There's no more details than what you have seen and hopefully read.
There's no affect just don't do it.
Answer to questions Yes & Maybe.. but why remove them, and if u made only de-cat pipes then a YES I would think so.
"It could get expensive if people have to buy new ones especially on the older cars". It's expensive for any car old or new :(.

Also how do you stand IF you bought the vehicle and it was already de-catted. Will they expect you to know this and also replace the missing cat system???

A diesel won't require one for the MOT. Spoke to a tester yesterday who had just done a refresher course.
apparently the diesel "cat" is a particulate filter and not testable.
the "cats" in question are applicable to spark ignition engines.

theres another thread somewhere on here with a link to it.

just knock the inners out of the pipe. it will look the same so no body will be any wiser.

Interested to know how to "knock the inners out of the pipe" when you have cats similar to this as we do, and look the same so no body will be any wiser .

Just had mine MOT'd (passed no problems 2nd yr running) and asked the guy about the exhaust and he said for diesel engines it wont matter as they are a particle filter not emissions. really glad since ive had a stainless exhaust fitted front to back with no cat or silencers. did say that after market HID lights fitted to cars will have to have a washer system and system which allows you to move them up and down, most cars do these days.

If you couldn't manage with a long bar, then cut the cat off, smash out and re-weld.

No, they are not allowed to cut your exhaust off to have a look! :D

Or just cut a section our of the cat in situ, smash the cat out and reweld the patch on.. sure they'd have suspicions about why there was weld on the cat body but you can't fail a vehicle on suspicion of a fault....

There's no such thing as a diesel cat btw, it's a particulate filter and works on a completely different principle,

Because when you rev the car you're heating the filter and you're burning off the particles rather than just releasing them to the atmosphere as you would if one weren't fitted...
That's the idea anyway but if you don't rev it up or take it on long journeys, the particles build up in the filter and clog the exhaust causing problems

yeah then you need to thrase the car to spew said particulate in a big black cloud all at once. Not over a longer time.At the end of the day wat comes out of the tail pipe wether every day or stored up to be blasted out on a high rev driving mission is still deposited in atmosphere it doesn't disappear? As for being burnt off its still there its just a way to get car to pass omission tests but store up the crap to be blown throw at a later date. The same as the erg explain why and whats its purpose because as far as i can see its just ther to catch **** that you have to wash or clean out so putting the bi product back into enviroment but at a later date!
