Just driven the 18miles to my parents house. Noticed a light irregular knocking noise from the rear end, so pulled over and had a look. Nothing doing, except a little oil on the rear diff casing. The filling cap was loose, so I presumed it was leaking a little - plenty of oil in there when it came out, so I tightened it. Checked tyre pressures and such whilst I was on the forecourt, and drove gently on to parents, assuming the knocking noise might be a bearing needed replacement.
There were a couple more knocking noises on the way, and when I arrived, there are two neat hole in the diff casing, rear. One jagged one, dead centre, and one smooth one on the right. Will try and get some pics up.
I'm okay with checking brakes and light DIY, but this is beyond me - suggestions?

:nopics: i drained the diff dried it with a heat gun and used metal putty was a good repair

your diff is breaking up,you will have to pull half shafts out and remove diff, you can then remove rear prop completely and drive in diff lock

Wow. when was the last time you changed the oil in there?

it looks like it was something coming from inside that burst out, to do that damage, i think its time you called a garage mate:confused:

or maybe there is a member near by willing to give it a look over, worth asking i reckon.

good luck with it and let us know the outcome.

Pol

i think you will be better off getting recon diff which comes with axle case or second hand one but check drive flange turns smoothly on it before you buy it

Kevin

So sorry for you, but wow!

Known rear axles to get small holes which can be 'patched' with metal putty, but never seen anything like that before.

Guys - what would have come loose to punch through the casing like that - must be something more than corosion:wtf:

Cheers for the replies gents. Oil was last done by the garage I boughtit from, october time (3500ish miles back).

Pet theory is this - the oil plug might have gone in too far when replaced after I checked the oil level, then cuahgt, been dragged in and spat out again - the RH hole appears inwards, the LH appears outwards. Currently arguing with the bolts to get the cover off and look....

KeV - I will be around tomoz pm. If yu want to get it back. Easy to do.
Remove halfshafts and rear prop . Drive it home in difflock.:)

Cheers Mate - much appreciated offer! Would appreciate someone who knows a bit more than me taking a look, but don't worry about getting it home - it's parked on my parents drive and will stay there til fixed (I live in a flat and Dad has more tools than me....)

Hopefully, if my theory is correct, the opil cap has been pulled in and punched out with minimal damage, so might be lucky and get away with a new cover...got half the bolts off before dark, and will carry on swearing at it in the AM

Can yu get it under cover, as it's meant to be persistently raining tomoz?

Pm me yo tel number and I will give a call when free tomoz pm.

Latest news - have removed the diff cover, to find no apparent signs of damage. Jacked the wheel and spun it all round and everything seems in one piece, so just need a new cover. Paddock seem cheapest - how express is their express service? (or suggestions for anywhere else that can get a cover out to me ASAP?
