Mpi disco's - why the bad rep?

That is fine, but to simply write of the Mpi as crap is inaccurate. For people who want a discovery for everyday use, that can still tow a useful load and is faster on motorways and dual carriageways than a Tdi, without the running costs of a V8. The Mpi is a very useable vehicle.

I've written off mpi discovery as ****- yes driven one
Just like a freelander 1.8 is ****
I back this up by residual values of **** all

tbh i never had a problem with are tdi disco goes like a dream on the motorway im not comparing it to a v8 mind v8 are in a different league

tbf ye if it was that good it would of took of more i mean i have never seen a mpi in hereford or ever saying that, im not saying there crap as i never drove one,just think people at time of buying them new, couldnt see the need for it as the v8 and tdi do everything the mpi can,

I've driven an Mpi a few times over a few months (a mates in good condition) and compared to my Tdi it's ****e.

It's an opinion, not necessarily fact, but that's what it feels like in comparison for every type of driving I do, especially for green-laning and off-roading. Not enough low down grunt and the one I drove wouldn't just lope along on tickover so you had to be in a lower gear, at almost any technical section, with higher revs than was ideal.

When towing the caravan similar thing .. revs had to be up and in the wet it often spun a front wheel on tight corners, say when setting off from a T-junction. Very hard to match pulling power to road condition without having more revs than necessary,though I guess you could et used to it .. but should you have to?

In my view the engine is underpowered for a Disco, with not enough torque at lower revs .. a typical small petrol engine. I'd guess in other vehicles and other situations they might be a good engine, I don't know, my opinion is of the engine in a Disco doing what I do .., either towing a caravan, with 4 people and loads of kit, or off-roading/green-laning, again mostly with people and kit in.

My parents had an MPI for over 12 years (got it from new), They weren't interested in torque or power as they just needed the 7 seats to tow me, my bro and sis + m8s around.
It did its job, they always said it had no on tap accelleration what so ever. Never broke either, except from when my mother condemned it when the front diff went after 150,000 miles(first breakdown in its life), when she got rid of the MPI there was absolutely no rust on it what so ever, so it was doing good.

Sadly she then part ex'd it for a brand new Freelander td4(Terrible I know)
(me and my dad have never forgiven her for selling our disco).

However I have recently bought a Disco 300 3.9 V8i... and that has much more power and accelleration(as you would expect) even my parents when I got it were shocked at the power it had(because they were expecting it to be like their old disco).

So the morale of my story is that you shouldn't really just cast out the MPI just because its not as powerful. It seriously just depends what you want to use it for. Like I said we had one for 12+ years and It never Let us down. We used to tow our boat around with it + It towed a trailer when we moved house.

Yes, I agree that It would be totally ****e at climbing up a muddy hill or over a big rock... But it was very good for most other things.

so you have a 300 diesel or a 3.9v8?

I think it should read 300 series 3.9 V8i as quote: "and that has much more power and accelleration" which are words one would not use when refering to a 300 Tdi engined disco.

Totally correct its a 300 series 3.9l V8i

Well I've had the mpi for just over a week.. And I can agree it doesn't match up to either the tdi or V8 for power/torque, but for my everyday commute and carrying myself/mates and a full load of fishing/camping gear it seems to handle itself reasonably well.
I've done 250 miles on 20 quids worth of gas (about 40 litres) so that works out at about 25mpg(ish).. but at less than half the price of desiel/petrol I can live with the lack of guts for what I have it for...
Although I admit.. I cant part with my series 3 as if I get the mpi stuck in 1" of mud (bound to happen).. at least then I can tow it out..lol.

Odd thing is.. I;ve just got hold of a 200tdi lump.. and thats going in the Series 3...

LOL and that's the point .. I dislike 'em 'cos they don't work how I want my semi-offroader to work. If you like it and it does what you want and more than you expected then why worry what others think?

Totally agree, life's to short to worry about minor things like engines in a Disco. I bet you have a copy of Rave for one though...

mmmm read this with interest , good to know somoeones opinion of the mpi , i have had one for 15 months and i would describe it as gutless . its fine on the flat tootling to work but here in wales theres a few hills and the mpi struggles , i need to keep the revs high , above 3000 or 3500 rpm or she practically stops . towing trailers is ok , towing cars up steep hills is a joke , had to go into low box first gear with high revs to get mates car up a hill , left me feeling shortchanged ...looks like a landrover ? got a landrover badge ? but doesn't pull like you expect a landrover to pull . disappointing.
stuck with the fooker an all as got another nipper on the way and can't afford a proper landy .
