Mpi disco's - why the bad rep?

okay... second question.

I've just picked up a 1995 Mpi disco 1... It's got a fully working LPG kit (underslug tanks).. It seems to run along okay (well its faster than my Series III).. does about 24mpg on gas (which equates to about 48mpg on our heavily taxed petrol/desiel).
It even seems to handle off road stuff when in low gears and given some throttle (okay it doesn't hold a torch to my S3 in the real mud).

So.. why do they have such a bad rep? (and before you ask.. yes I have driven a tdi).

Open floor to ridicule and **** taking:

All the 'usual' Disco issues of rust etc without the saving grace of tractable power and economy .. as JuiceyV8 said ... ;)

Mpi is only a 2.0 having to move 2ton approx no turbo/big engine and no grunt...wats the selling point?? "sorry cant tow you, not a powerful engine"

When driving they have no torque, so no pulling power. They're a small engine so won't just tickover or slog at low revs through obstacles.

On paper they 'look' OK, but they're gutless in real-world conditions.

Technical word is "****"

........But if it floats ya boat;)

Exactly - and if you try to use the mpi like a tdi the engine will not thank you for it (they're T series not K so at least you haven't got to worry about the head gasket...much).

T series suffered from HG probs to - but that was actually sorted with the introduction of the Klinger gasket.

T series are good for 300BHP, so they shouldnt be underpowered.

I agree, but bhp means nothing when you need it to pull steadily, with traction, through a bog or out of a mudhole ... or a trailer of horses out of a field, all you do with engine horse power is spin the wheels ...;)

okay.., now I think I see..

As a proper land rover (ie pulling stuff, ploughing though mud etc) they are pretty ****e.. But tbh.. I use mine on road and for some very very slight off road stuff (getting to fishing lakes and the like).. and I never use it for towing.. hence why I dont notice the lack of tractorbility.
Also when compared to my S3.. power is okay.. but then again my 2.25p S3 couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding if it had the help of gavity! lol..

But.. I'm more interested in knowing if they have any specific failings with regards to the engine (I know about the disco rot and the T series H/G issues) both things I watch out for.. I'm more worried if there are likely to be costly mechanical issues related to the ****e engine?

Again.. thanks for the honesty... always nice to know when your drive a pile of "****".. lol.. :)

Just, as far as I know, the same general issues as any other Disco .. ;)

But then I don't know much about the engine as it never interested me .. ;)

because apart from the cheaper insurance the fuel economy not great and a v8 or diesel better in so many ways

My auto disco 300 is a non edc model 111 bhp .It weighs about 2 ton so when towing 2 ton it only gives you about 28 bhp per ton .Have to drop into 3rd or second on hills.:D

If they are honest, how many people slagging off the Mpi have actually driven one? They really are not as bad as many people think. I had one for over a year and regularly towed a 2 ton boat and trailer without difficulty. If you adjust your driving style to compensate for the lower torque of the Mpi, then they are not bad at all. People never complain about the old series engines and the early 90 and 110 engines when used off road, and they make nowhere near the power or torque of the Mpi. Mine was always totally reliable. The main downside of them is that they are relatively thirsty, unless compared to the V8, and for every day use they are just as good as the V8 to drive. Unless that is, you drive everywhere flat out, or tow more than 2.5 tons.

only thing they were good for is powering stationary gensets - which is what they were used for before LR needed a cheap engine
