Just an update about the worry I had about the prop shafts. I just did the other sides CV joint and spotted a metal ring spacer that I couldn't remember seeing on the others side! Turns out mixed in all the old grease from before was a ring. Took off the previous CV joint and put the ring spacer...

OK thanks for all you tips, I didn't have a socket large enough and again found it a very tight fit but tried using the end of a socket extension and gently tapped around the edge - making sure not to nip the rubber. It worked a treat! (See attached photo) However with everything back...

Thanks for all your replies, especially SpacePig. General consensus seems to be that vented brakes are really not worth the extra money for a P38, and the weight saving is so little, there won't be any impact, so worth sticking with standard disks. Thanks

Spoke to the garage again today and he said it was definitly showing signs of exhaust gases in the coolant, so it has to be the head or gasket. He knows I'll be doing it myself so has nothing to gain from shading the truth. Whether the radiator is still a dud I'll know more after doing the head...
