P38 Front Drive Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

Just an update about the worry I had about the prop shafts. I just did the other sides CV joint and spotted a metal ring spacer that I couldn't remember seeing on the others side! Turns out mixed in all the old grease from before was a ring. Took off the previous CV joint and put the ring spacer...

P38 Front Drive Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

OK thanks for all you tips, I didn't have a socket large enough and again found it a very tight fit but tried using the end of a socket extension and gently tapped around the edge - making sure not to nip the rubber. It worked a treat! (See attached photo) However with everything back...

P38 Front Drive Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

Sorry I know this is an old thread. I've just done my hub seal but found the old one a bugger to get out so had to chisel it out, then the new one refused to go in without a fight. I tried to gently knock it in but must have damaged it because its all back together and now leaking... I've...

Vented brakes worth it or a waste?

Thanks for all your replies, especially SpacePig. General consensus seems to be that vented brakes are really not worth the extra money for a P38, and the weight saving is so little, there won't be any impact, so worth sticking with standard disks. Thanks

Vented brakes worth it or a waste?

Actually thought it was a bit of a strange comment about saving weight, but thought I'd run it by you guys. Found the original tip in this months LRO magazine, in the tuning section insert. Cheers

Diesel headgasket change, timing chain question

I've got the horrible task of changing my head gasket on the BMW 2.5 lump, reading Rave I can see the procedure need the timing chain tool kit (unfortunetly). However I wondered when I take the chain off the cam so I can get the head off should I make a note of what position it was in? I mean is...

Removing camshaft cover, all bolts were loose...

Spoke to the garage again today and he said it was definitly showing signs of exhaust gases in the coolant, so it has to be the head or gasket. He knows I'll be doing it myself so has nothing to gain from shading the truth. Whether the radiator is still a dud I'll know more after doing the head...

Removing camshaft cover, all bolts were loose...

Going to ring the garage to double check the results tomorrow, they had been kept up to date with my cooling issues and I decided to do the gasket check. Yeah so must of the coolant system changed, possibly a duff new radiator might also be a reason for the overheating, but as the test for...

Removing camshaft cover, all bolts were loose...

Thanks for all your replies, it is a diesel P38, but had another thread diagnosing my heating issues after replacing radiator, water pump, thermostat then getting a garage to do a chemical test which found exhaust gases in the coolant, not that I had any loosing of coolant. Interesting that you...

Removing camshaft cover, all bolts were loose...

I've been told my head gasket will need doing, after I had overheating issues. I come to take off the camshaft cover and find all the bolts loose. Not only that where the injectors are some have pools of oil. Ok I'm sure the bolts are not supposed to be loose but would this mean I would get the...

    Tips for Viscous fan removal

Oh bugger... am I right in thinking if it is a cracked head I will see signs when I take it off? Is it as simple as replacing it if that is the case or is it a real pain in the arse? Thanks

    Tips for Viscous fan removal

Yes agreed, however I'm going to need to do the head gasket anyway. I had many back and forths with the radiator manufacturer and apart from rip it open and send pictures its difficult to prove. With the head gasket done that will be everything changed so if it still over heats I will be seeking...

    Tips for Viscous fan removal

Well the old radiator went quite mysteriously, I just drove it out the garage and the thing sprang a leak in the core, new radiator was hot from the top ever since. I heard that often the radiator can blow if the head gasket goes, and I can only think that when I started it the pressure was...
