Series 3 2.25 diesel tapping noise

A well known issue with those engines are the prechambers. If they come out of position they will make a tapping sound. When this happens, you should not drive any longer, or your engine will be ruined.

engine number change 3 to 5 bearing

The engine serial and suffix can tell, they have a red color or take a look at this for a visual.

82 degrees at the thermostat housing?

I would advise you to install an oilcooler with thermostat, especially when the engine has to operate on heavy circumstances like towing, hot temperatures (> 25 Celsius), slow city traffic or long stationary duties.

    What will it tow?

Trailers are often kept in bad maintenance. Wrong or uneven tyre pressure, fawlty suspension, wrong load balance etc. These are the major reasons a trailor is wobbling or trying to overtake the towing vehicle. A good maintenanced trailor follows the leader :-)

    Top speed from Series 3?

Hmm... On an average day mine runs a 59mph, but considering the streamline of an old fashioned telephonebox, it's most likely about 45-50 mph. With 2 tons trailer she does 47-49. Seems that towing has a bit less effect than wind :-)

    What will it tow?

I used tot live in the German Eifel for some years, but a friend of mine and his fancy landcruiser had more trouble not being overtaken by his trailer, than me with the old lady. :D I think one of the reasons is, that modern drivers are lacking skills to cope with basic tasks like towing or...

    What will it tow?

Partly I agree on that, but towing a 2 ton trailer means a speed limit of 80 km/h aniway. So, the same restrictions as lorries on highways over here. When driving a series, you need to anticipate with the restrictions of your vehicle, the same as anyone else driving non-standard vehicles...

    overheating

Overheating has always been a problem when pushing de engine to its limits. Our militairy landies were all equipped with an oilcooler and better vents to prevent overheating.

has anyone changed valve oil seals before? tips needed

Also check the prechambers, they often get dislocated, producing a ratling noise and lots of smoke. They should be sticking out of the head by 0.6 mm. When running too long with dislocated chambers, you will ruin the engine.

    What will it tow?

I think it depends what approval is given. That depends per country. Over here the max is 3500 kg, but only approved towinghooks (2000 kg) are available.

    overheating

Mine had the same a few days ago. Blown gasket -former owner did put a copper one inn- between 1st and 2nd cilinder. That brings me to an old discussion here; If you have an engine with 8:1 ratio, never use a copper one! It simply can't handle the stress.
