Are you referring to the cyclone breather on top of the engine, or is there another breather that I am missing?

Once the case is open, it’s pretty difficult to tell where the leak is coming from as there is oil everywhere. I was considering taking the timing cover off and running the engine for a minute to try and see the leak - not sure if that is a great idea though.

Are you sure it's gearbox oil leaking out of the bell housing? If it's coming out of the wading plug hole then it could be engine oil which would likely mean you need to replace your rear crankshaft oil seal.

Sounds to me like the spring inside your lock has snapped. This happened to me a while ago. There is a repair kit you can buy and it's just a case of drilling out the rivets, replacing the spring and installing the new rivets which are included in the kit. Here's a link to a repair kit...
