Hi Guys,

I'm currently rebuilding my defender (no thread on here as I can't understand how anyone has the time for that as well as a rebuild!) and I am fitting the new plug style of lights onto it. The defender is a '93 200tdi so it originally had the lights that are earthed through a screw which is srewed into the body.

My question is- On the new defenders with these plug style lights, how are the lights earthed? Do they all run to a common earth or are they earthed to the body inside the tub or inside the wings etc?

This might be a weird question and I might have made a complete mess of explaining it, but hopefully someone can help.

Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

I can't speak from experience, not having owned anything that new, but I think the earths will still be made to the body earth points. Running them all to a common earth would be costly in a way that motor manufacturers tend to avoid.

Even the old lights with the bullets still had an earth that ran back to a common at the back of the tub or on the inner wings on the front the screw earth was just an extra.

There is an earth that runs from the rear loom to the bulkhead which runs the rear stuff, but there is also local earths.

I think I have mis-understood your question. As above, the earths from each light on mine run back to a common point in the wing or rear tub. This in turn has a single earth wire running to another common earth point on the bulkhead.
