Sounds like i've got a wheel bearing gone and having difficulty deciding which side. Also am I right in beleiving there are 2 each side - an inner and outer? Any tests I can do to decide which one is causing the noise. I hear it more when I turn the wheel slightly and freewheel around a bend...

Thats the kind of good news we like to hear. Going do the tippex test tomorrow just to be sure. Believe I have to mark the 2 propshafts and not the VCU as some have done.

Read this somewhere but cant find it now. When you turn into a carpark space or reverse out of one it feels like the handbrake has come on and slows the car. Is this a normal symptom or a sign of VCU failure?

Noticed the heater fan doesnt work on number 1 but is fine on all other speeds. My girlfriends rover doesnt work on numbers 1 & 2 but all others are fine. Are there known problems with these controls and is replacement with new the only solution?

Good luck with the project. I had also seen the repair kits on ebay and wondered if anyone had had any success using them.

Are Torx sockets the same as Star sockets? And are the bolts on the drive train Torx or normal Hex bolts? Birthday coming up and thinking of letting one of the kids buy me a set then just wondering what I might need to use em for if I do.

Just got my first freelander and plan to change the IRD oil. Bit puzzled as to why a couple of folk asked if it was any quieter after. Surely it would be if there was none or not enough oil in to start with but changing it shouldnt make a difference should it. Or am I missing something?
