TD4 Turbo Cutting Out

Hi All,

I'm hoping that somebody can shed some light on this.

When I go up hill at about 70MPH the turbo on my TD4 feels like it is cutting out. If I slow down so 60 (ish) MPH it comes back on.

But when I'm ragging around the lanes on Exmoor I don't have any problems (Max speed 50 - 60 MPH).

I have tried driving with the MAF disconnected, the egr valve disconnected and I have changed the air, fuel, oil and crank breather filters. Non of it made a difference.

When it cuts out I'm not getting black smoke out the back.

sorry no advice, but, i am in the same boat just bought 2001 td4 at wkd and only happens (not all the time)when i hit 70mph,i.e. on motorway,no problems whatsoever on normal roads at speeds up to 60mph.
Even with foot flat down on accelerator it just wont budge until it wants to, then its ok. Like i said it doesnt happen all time,but it is annoying when trying to overtake.
Its a shame because i absolutely love the thing and that seems to be the only negative thing i can find.
 
Your engine is overboosting,this causes the engine Ecu to cut fuelling to prevent engine damage.often caused by the linkage on the VNT,(variable nozzle turbo) jamming up or falling apart inside the turbo_Or the vacuum pipe has fallen off the actuator capsule or solenoid controller.The solenoid that controls the application of vacuum can also fail.

fuel filter or that pesky rear pump has gone weak. . . .:)
 
Hi All,

I had a quick poke around this afternoon and found this pipe just hanging around (See attached pic). Any idea what it is or if it should be connected at both ends?

HI All,

I have been thinking about Ming's suggestion about fuel pumps.

If the rear fuel pump is faulty, how can I check it?

I tried to start her on just the font pump (unplugged the rear one), and she started up OK, but is a bit lumpy when revved. When I tried to start her on just the rear pump I got nothing, not even a little splutter.

Should she be able to start on just the rear pump?

Nope !
the rear pump wont give you anywhere near enough pressure to the injectors

AND Im sure the front pump dunt last long bein run on its own for any length o time
So stop buggerin about befor yer bust it more !
 
mondo's correct. . . .the rear pump sends fuel ta engine bay filter ,then ya got a lift pump [at front] cos er height from tank ta engine, a pressure regulator un heater to a high pressure pump for injectors with a bleed orft system un return to tank, its common for the rear pump to go weak, but very hard to prove , a puter int gonna work out if its not running correct , but a pressure gauge will , trouble is sods law it will show up fine in a workshop , bit different under load at say 70 mph, have a look in search it has bin coverd before i think . . . oh jist found it fer ya darft vador , type in, the story so far this might elp ya.:)
 
Both the fuel pumps are reconnected.

Getting back to the Turbo, how do I check the linkages to the VNT?

I have attached a cutaway picture of a VNT turbo (from Chiptuning DMT Chiptuning - dmtuning.com - Rendement Power Vermogen voor uw auto). Don't know if it is the same as the one on the TD4, but the actuator mechanism seems to be shown.

Should you be able to press in the bit that I have pointed to?

Have you had the fuel pressure sensor out ?
Check the connections on the plug first for crap connections,If it looks ok whip the sensor out and give it a good clean "CAREFULLY" and dunt get any crap in't ole !

But i still think it sounds like a rear fuel pump fault ?

How much fuel you got in yer tank when this happens ?

If yer under 1/4 full, try fillin it up and take it out on a simmilar run to where the fault origionally happens !
 
Do you mean the sensor on top of the monster fuel filter? I have checked the connector a couple of time, but I didn't realise you can get the sensor itself out. I'll have a look this evening.

It doesn't matter how much fuel is in the tank, this little gremlin rears its head at all levels.
