I might be doing a How to remove a k-series head

 Take that back N.I. I'm dissapointed in you! That's no way to treat your girl!

Lol

The the thought had crossed my mind, you have to consider all the options.

my worse case scenario is a dropped liner, in which case it's the end of the engine. Can't find any 1.8 locally at the mo, plenty of FL without MOT/TAX (that's just the local run abouts :p) asking around £800, I would haggle them down a bit of course, but the harsh reality is pumping any money into any car is not sustainable.

I have owned my FL from new.

Would I do it again?......................Hell no!

When I think of the money paid through HP

With rent to pay and mouths to feed, it's difficult to justify throwing money into it, but that's modern day motoring........just a hole in the ground which you throw money into!!

Stripping a FL down is going to take me time, and even more time to flog the parts on ebay / LZ, only then would I cover any costs.

I have even scanned the srappage schemes............Naw no thanks Gordon Brown. The only people to benefit are gov idiots and foreign car makers.

It aint over yet, and the fat lady hasn't sung, so nothing left but to:

GO TO IT & DO IT !

Step 1:

Make a brew ;)

I would normally suggest going for an ulster fry, it is Friday fry-day afterall. But I'm all out of eggs and bacon.

ulster fry aka english breakfast, except we use soda bread and potato bread, any time you are in NI, you must sample an ulster fry ;)

Never even heard of potato bread, may have to come up north and sample! I've been over here for almost four months now and haven't once touched Northern soil yet so a bit of sight seeing may be in order soon.

bring your own overalls, it will be a working breakfast.

In that case it will be a bacon and egg soda. (bacon and egg sandwiched between two pieces of soda bread/farl)

Handy, soda in one hand spanner in the other ;)

Errrrrrrrm.............since when did LR4x4 Land Rover forum become Landyzone?

Plus yer mans 'how to' is incomplete, no point in telling someone to undo the crank nut without a mention of the tools needed.

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f38/k-series-head-bolts-hgf-tool-info-48856.html

Why is he disconnecting any sensors on the throttle body and IAVC he's taking you the long way round. The inlet comes off as one complete assembly.

Plus you don't undo the exhaust manifold bolts unless absolutely necessary. Think about it.

No mention of the most critical point when head is removed or showing how to check the head face and tolerances.

Well the head is off, good news is liners still appear to be proud and piston rings were holding all coolant, water tight!

Bad news, Spot the burnt exhaust valve

Cylinders have cleaned up well when drained

Pics are bit ropey, only started around 2pm this afternoon and it was dark by 4

I have a series of pics along each step but not sure whether LZ is the place to put them. They could be going on a K-series forum (a proper enthusiasts forum ;))

Here was the problem, nasty bite out of the valve, hot spot appears to have etched in to the metal as gases left the cylinder, all aluminium and valve seats were perfectly sound :)

Even made the valve compression tool from bits of scrap, saving £40 ;)

All in parts totalled about £60

Recon valve £6
new stem oil seals x 16 £16
OE competition gasket £14
Exhaust gasket £7 (Wasn't necessary but took manifold off to smooth off the valve ports)
Valve paste £4

Cam oil seals and inlet manifold seal can be re-used if sound ;)

attachments:

1 & 2 - DIY valve spring compressor tool made from an indoor cycle trainer and a swingball tube lol (both from the neighbours skip ;))

3 & 4 - burnt valve with spring removed (note the one penny as a scaler object for comparison against the damaged vlave and tiny collets)

5 - polished ports
