All, have just bought my wife a September 2000 Freelander TD4 Hardback. Seems very clean with a full history, although some is with independents. Reading all of the horror stories about failed VCU's would it be sensible to renew the VCU before it becomes an issue..... E Bay has them for £275.00 which isn't too bad. The car has done approx 53,000 miles.

You can tell I am nervous..... if I am honest I have never been that keen on Freelanders:D I, after several Range Rover's, run a Discovery3. That said my last car was a 2005 Range Rover Vogue and the front diff splines failed after less than a year.... got rid of it because within three months of the repair it was making noises again:mad:

I guess the Freelander can't be worse than that?

I would'nt touch it, you might never have to. then again it might already need replacing. some seem to go for the life of the car and others fail for whatever reason. you could buy one from EBAY for a spare. but how many spares do you buy ?.
Cheers Dylan

why dont you check your VCU, and if it is OK wait for it to go? That is, if it ever does.

How do you tell when they're "going" and what happens when they fail? (do they sieze up or just stop transfering to the rear wheels?)

Do a search on the forum. It has been discussed before and there are methods of testing the VCU posted in this section.

REET. . .take it out on some mud or wet grass is best and if you can drive down a slippy hill even better , drive it wiv hill decent and try and boot it, if the motor refuses to let you spin the wheels all is fine ,if front wheels spin like mad its kaput, if they go u/s not driving that wont effect ird , the problem of ird is if its a=siezed or b= coupling or bearing problems, as fer gettin a spare dont bother. . .jist take it on some slippy stuff now un agin. . . .:) :) :)
