New Electric Sunroof Motor:---I don't think So

Hi all, where do i begin lol.........................................

My front sunroof motor stopped working yesterday so i ever so lovingly took it to my local LR dealer this morning to have it checked out...After 10 minutes wait in the waiting room with free coffee i must add lol...i was told the motor was U/S and it needed a new 1 fitted due to water ingress due to the front sunroof tubes being blocked.
NOW FOR THE FUN BIT LOL....I was quoted as follows:-

New Sunroof Motor..........................£186.00
Labour for fitting.............................£ 62.00
Labour for clearing sunroom tubes......£ 62.00

Total including VAT.........................£310.00

TOLD THEM I WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT AND BROUGHT MY CAR HOME.....

Got home and removed front curtesy light mounting tray/sunroom switch mounting thing...the long thing that runs from n/s to o/s

5 minutes labour

Removed sunroof motor

2 minutes labour

stripped motor

2 minutes

cleaned out corrosion with a small wire brush and a tooth brush

10 minutes labour

reassembled motor

2 minutes

Refitted motor

2 minutes

Tested and all worked correctly

Refitted that long trim thing

5 minutes

So the moral of the story is.....

For the cost of 6 cups of coffee and 28 minutes of my time i saved a F***ing fortune lol

If your sunroof motor goes off give me a shout they are a doddle to fix

Always been the same with main dealers what ever the make, they don't repair (don't know how to) but always replace.

Read your post and have done mine this morning!! nice and easy and took my time, just need to find the drain holes now for next job!!

The best thing it use for the drain holes, i have found is a piece of net curtain wire, wot your gran used to hang up the nets with.

Fully open the front sunroof...........then carefully feed the curtain wire into the n/s front corner until it hits the metal frame.
Then waggle it around a little as if you were trying to have a bit of nooky with your mrs when you have had a skinful of beer....to align with the drain hole for entry lol.
Then slowly feed the wire down the drain tube,about 5ft of insertion will result in the end of the wire clearing the lower end of the tube.Retract half way and reinsert the wire to remove all of the gunk from the inside of the tube.
Repeat this procedure for the o/s/f drain tube also.
FINALLY AND NO MEANS LEAST.

Remember to clean off the sunroof seal thoroughly with hot soapy water and also the underside of the sunroof where the seal closes against.

Then

If you are really unlucky with the sunroof leaks it will be a case of the sealer between the sunroof carrier and the roof of the Disco cracking and causing the leak or the sunroof drain tubes actually breaking away from the sunroof carrier.
Most of the time the sunroofs leak because of blocked sunroof drain tubes,dirty sunroof seals or distorted sunroof seals.
It is always best to start with the cost free options.....

Clean sunroof seals AND the underside of the sunroof glass where the sunroof seal sits.

Clean out sunroof drain tubes.

Then if it still leaks......remove the headlining.....sit inside the vehicle with the suroofs and doors and windows shut and get someone to WET TEST the roof, or in land rover terms....soak the roof with a hosepipe for a good 10-15 minutes to allow the sunroof carriers to fill with water. Then as You are sitting in the car you will be able to see where the water is ingressing into the car.

A sunroof will leak only if the seals are faulty there two of them so take your pick it nothing to do with drain tubes you don't need them if the seals are ok and how muck gets past the seal and blocks a 10mm tube I don't know.

Both of my front sunroof drain tubes were blocked,bunged up solid with what looked like a mixture of dried mud and sand.these lumps fell out when i poked them through with a net curtain wire. I then flushed them out with a hose pipe into a clean bucked and the rubbish that came out of each tube was not nice...After clearing the tubes and cleaning the sunroof seals i have NO leaks and no water build up in the sunroof tray even when it throws it down.

I had a non-operative front sunroof on my Disco and falsely assumed the problem to be electrical - having been raped by my friendly local LR main dealer before I took the car to Auto Electrics (Teesside) Ltd in Thornaby this morning.

They reported that the motor was 'completely seized', and quoted £290 + labour +VAT to replace. Like WolfyDave, I brought the car home for a think, not before being relieved of £66.09 by Auto Electrics (Teesside) Ltd for this expert opinion.

Having googled the problem (initially searching for a second hand motor) and stumbing upon this site, I have just removed the motor, cleaned it, refitted and tested, all working fine, all within an hour.

Got the same problem with mine was going to just seal it up but if its that easy im gonna fix it from one Dave to another Dave cheers mate

Garages are such robbing ba@%ds. my mate hade put a dodgey batch of bio in his disco and it lost all power. we couldnt work ou what it was (we didnt think it was going to be the bio), so down to the garage we went. We get there and explained the situation and he said he knows exactly whats wrong with it, the pump is blocked (at the time we thought he ment the injector pump)

anyway £365 later (thats with 10% army discount) he gets it back. not long ago, he had the same problem (due to filling up with jerry can, full of crap at the bottom) so i said i would have a go. I opened the bonnet and i relised, the fuel hits the lift pump before the injector pump.

anyway the story is the lift pump has one screw to undo at the top to clean it out and took 10 min!

The filter is next in line to the lift pump-if the lift pump screen is clogged,then the filter will not be far behind-expect to have to change it soon-Always prudent to carry spare filters with you ,particularly if running bio-filters are only a couple of quid after all

it was a brand new filter, we change them after every 1-2 full tanks (get them free from work). The batch just turned into a semi solid mixture
