Up **** creek.
Ages ago my immobiliser decided to unexpectedly come on for a few hours and then just as unexpectedly go off and my truck has been working great ever since.

Sometimes she starts up the second I turn the key, sometimes there is a split seconds hesitance and then she turns over (I put it down to a sticking starter solenoid).

About 3 weeks ago I went to start her up and the immobiliser light came on. I took the key out and repeated the process once or twice more and she started up, it appears that if I then turn the engine off but leave the key in the ignition (one click) I can stop/start her as many times as I like.

If I take the key out and then retry the light may come on five/six/seven times before she will start or she may fire up first turn, it doesnt matter which key I use either, my main key with fob will work the remote central locking, my spare will not but will lock/unlock the car manually and start the engine. The problem seems intermittent with no obvious cause.

I keep an immobiliser spider bypass unit in my glovebox after the first time it happened but havent got round to installing it yet as for me it will mean removing the dash (the fella selling them offered a fitting service if you lived close enough and claimed he could fit one in under 10 minutes via the radio cavity but Ive had a look and it seems almost impossible).

Do you think its time to fit the unit or could there be any other possible fixes im missing? Also I have noticed that if I put the key in the ignition and only turn it to position 2 there will be a short pause and then a quiet click when the immobiliser light will either come on or not, it it doesnt come on she will turn over and fire up every time.

hope someone can help, Cheers:)

If your disco is 1996 model then you have a two button fob and it's the fob that will remobilise the engine when placed near the ignition switch and not the key.
When the engine is immobilised you won't be able to even crank the engine, if you can, I would look somewhere else for the reason the engine is not firing, but if you can't crank the engine then it could be a spider fault.

I havent looked but I understand that u can get to the spiders wiring plug to unplug and fit a bypass link via the radio housing but not the spider its self that when the dash has to striped down.

There are other fixes that you are missing. Take some feeds off the back of the ignition, direct to the fuel pump and starter motor.

cheers for the replies, this is just one of many problems on my landy that im currently in the middle of getting sorted but is quite far down the priority list - that is unless the problem gets worse! I will try the other fixes before I try the spider bypass but have no experience with electrics at all so may get someone to help so please bear with me. If the other fixes dont work and it looks like it is the spider I will try the bypass unit 1st to identify the problem and then maybe at a later date I would fix the spider.

A quick update, I have now noticed that when I put the key in the ignition and wait the couple of seconds to see if the immobiliser light is going to come on, when it does come on if I leave the key in position rather than immediately panicking taking it out and swiftly retrying, the immobiliser light will flash from anything from 2 to 14 seconds and then go out, I can then start the car.

Discool you say the fob de immobilises the car not the key, one of my fobs will work the CL the other one will not, BOTH sets will start the truck, wierd:confused:
