KIN CONFUSED:confused:

Just been and had a look at all my oil and it says 80W-90 GL4/GL5:confused:

Which one eat's syncro's?

Gearbox has just blown up at 127k of Dexron 11,Re-con guy tell's me that I wana be putting MTF 94 in it, asked mi local French oil man and he just seid "ehh" and went off to eat!

So what oil wants to be in the gearbox & what oil in the transfer box please?????????

Dont care about price as it's got to be cheaper than a new box and forget difflock stuff as they want £7 Litre delivery to France.

Cheers Jason

GL5 has additives which eats away bronze/brass and will attack syncromesh and should not be used in gearboxes/ transfer boxes. GL5 is OK elsewhere - ie axles/diffs - but why have two - if yu use GL4 throughout - you cant get it wrong by mistake..

Jason, speaking of 80W-90 GL4/GL5:
- you don't have brass syncros in the transfer box
- you can't use 80W-90 in the gearbox (which does have brass syncros)
==> you shouldn't bother with what eats what and where.

But to answer your question, usually GL5 eats brass, it's all about additives used in the mix.

LR recommends:
- Castrol EPX 80W-90 for the transfer box (should be quite cheap)
- MTF 94 for the gearbox (I presume u have an R380 gearbox) which is a 75W-80 oil, GL4, with an exceptional viscosity index figure.

LR MTF 94 = Texaco MTF94 = Caltex MTF94 (down under) = same oil used on Honda's with MTF-7289 specification

£7 for 1 Litre delivered to France looks quite appealing to me (I pay much more than that)

The only oil (that I know of) that meets same specifications as Texaco MTF94 is Amsoil MTF and it's more expensive: AMSOIL - Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) 5W-30

If you don't do much towing, very long jurneys in temperatures above 30 deg C, you can also use Tranself TRJ 75W-80, available in France, brass syncros safe and quite close to MTF94 specs.

Another good source for what oil to use, in french, is here Récapitulatif des différents lubrifiants de transmission.

The MTF-94 specs are not so easy to find so I attached them to my post.

cipx2, Thank you for your excelent info on this subject. I think it's safe to say for the D1 at least, stick to a good mineral gear oil which for me will be a GL4 for my diffs and trans box and leave the part and fully synthetic's .. I wasn't aware of Castrol EPX 80w90 so I will look out for it.

Regards

I used ep 80/90 in the front and rear diffs and the transfer box and dexron II in the gearbox.I was under the impression that the earlyer boxes (LT77) uses dexron and the later box uses the mtf94. Also if your doing all the oils don't forget the front swivel joints. They hold 0.7ltrs of 89/90 per side.

Correct R380 gearbox .....etc

Read through that French bit, seems to be a massive debate over all this:rolleyes: oil malarky!

No that's £10litre + £7 delivery/postage per litre to france:eek:

So in a nut shell gearbox GL4 75W/80,Transfer box GL4 80W/90 yeh?

cheers jason

For the transfer box and axle diffs u can safely use both GL4 or GL5 (EPX 80W-90 is GL5). It's up to you ....

Don't mind the debate on the french forum, just use the info on the 1st post (except the part# for the oil, it's STC9158 for the 1 litre MTF94 and STC9157 for the 5 litre MTF94 - this is what I get, the 5 litre can, and I split it in half with someone else so I get to split the carriage cost as well).

So Far Impossible to find MTF 94 here, phoned local Land Rover dealer up and they did'nt even have any. They use and recomend Dexron 111 for gearbox!

Hmm, forget about LR official dealers ....

Here are some places were you can find MTF94 in FRANCE:

- Allmakes.fr - go to "Stock en Ligne" > Simple Visite > search for STC9157 ==> 30.19 euro HT
- Best of Land > Huile de BV MTF94 -5L ==> 33 euro TTC (contact them and check if they have it in stock)
- Espace Land you have to ask them
- EQUIP'LAND - piece detachee et accesoires par correspondance - BP 23 - 44530 ST GILDAS DES BOIS Tel : (00 33) 2 40 01 53 54 email: [email protected]

Thanks once again for all that cipx2.You are a top man:)

Spent all morning on the phone all the places on those links that I phoned were on Holiday until September.

I have had to get some Dexron 111 (quick fix) and even that I've had to order otherwise I'm going to have a new box and nothing to put in the bloody thing:mad:

After all, what do you think of this stuff?

http://www.difflock.com/cgi-bin/wm10/wm10_02606/st/ws20_9800/main/browse Merd! Wont let you link to it,do www.DIFFLOCK.com 4x4 muliti-store,oils & fluids, then scrol down to gearbox stuff!

Lot of people seem to rave about it, dont understand how the 2nd one's cheaper than the first?Bit vague about spec etc....

Cheers Jason

They say EVO 1 is for the gearboxes. They also say it's good for auto gearboxes as well. Another "one size fits all"? I can't find the specification for this oil.

The EVO 2 they say is for the transfer box, axles, swivels. The specs needed for these are not so hard to achieve so the price is lower.

I can't say anything about these oils. Yes, I know what difflock is but it's not enough to recommend them as oil manufacturers. The reports you can read from others are saying only about how easy is to change the gears with this new fluid. But that isn't enough I'm afraid. I'm not saying that the stuff isn't good for the job but it takes much more than what you can read on their website/forum to convince me to buy their stuff.

Try buying from UK, from some place else. Try LRdirect.com

If you don't find the MTF94 or you don't like the price, put Tranself TRJ 75W-90 in it but don't drive the heck out of the disco if there are more than 35 deg in the shade outside for long periods of time (long 130 km/h motorway stretches or mild offroading is ok). This oil is rather new, specially designed for the J class gearboxes used by Renault and Volvo. These gearboxes are maintenance free and lubricated for life so this oil can't be too bad.
I used this oil for 1 and 1/2 years up until this summer, when the temp. got up to 43 deg C and when I climbed up a steep mountain (800 meters using only 1 st, 2nd and 3rd gears in Low Range for about 2 hours on gravel roads) I felt the gears a little bit crunchy when changing gears. Obviously a gearbox cooler would have been great. I know other people using the same oil for the past 3-4 years on Defender and Disco Td5's with no problems at all.

So it's you choice: wait another 10-12 days for the holidays to end, get the MTF94 from UK or use a different oil, at least for a while.

Hi cipx2

Funny you should mention the heat thing (35+ in the shade) as the old box was fine (except for the usual 2nd gear syncro problem) until going down to Spain this summer (35°+ in the shade).Found that the gearshift was very stiff after the long motorway drive there & same when we got back, luckily the old girl did'nt blob on us down there. It was only after we got back the the syncros on 2nd & 4th went, dropped the oil and it looked like liquid gold, full of bronze, bearings on the main shaft were also well shagged!

Just got my new box from Blighty tonight & still no oil Bollox:mad:

Looks like it's going to be a mad run around tomorrow to find some Dexron 111 & will get some MTF-94 as soon as I can.

Thanks for all your help mate:)

Jason
