Not long ago I stripped my blower motor, the bearing had seized so I overhauled everything inside, re-lubed bearing and gave the whole thing an anti rust workout and paint. It ran fine but the brushes were very low (34 years of use) and it started vibrating again.

I decided to replace with a bilge blower fan from ebay.

I got the 3" 35watt fan from ebay and pulled my installation apart.

the nice thing about a 3" bilge is that it fits snugly in the existing heat exchanger - I wrapped some rubber floor matting around the interface and used two jubilee clips to keep it firmly in place.

Next issue was 2 speed fan, I ordered a 50watt 2ohm resistor from ebay too.
First position on switch goes end 1 on resistor - end 2 of resistor goes to the fan, this effectively halved my voltage and gave my slow speed.
Second position on blower switch goes straight to position 2 of resistor which is effectively straight to the fan, as switch position 1 loses its 12volts once you are at position 2 I wasn't worried about shorting the resistor out :O)

Took the fan ground to the resistor body screwed onto bulkhead.
I used bullet crimps for the connections so I could remove easily in future - then wrapped automotive tape around them all to keep it neat.

Result, lots more air flow...well chuffed!

I'm interested in something like this, could you post the details of the specific parts you bought.

what was the total cost? and have you run a pipe for the air intake or just left it open?
any more pictures of the setup would be good too.

thanks

Im going to be doing the exact same thing in a month or two :) and have done a bit of research already :)

A bilge blower on ebay is only about £20-£35 depending on wether you buy a 3" or 4" bilge blower.
I'll be fitting a 4" to mine. Not sure on price of resister but probably cheap.

Fitting a hose from the heat exchanger to the bilge blower which i will mount on the wing then I'll run a hose to the hole in the wing to stop stuff getting sucked up. Then wire it up in almost the same way as joe has done.

INLINE BILGE BLOWER 3" 12V VENTILATOR ENGINE BOAT VENT
eBay item number: 330643179185

50W Arcol Aluminium Clad Wirewound Resistor 2R2
eBay item number: 290958059805

£28 for all the bits - using some old jubilees and rubber I had lying around.

I was going to mount mine in wing but the open end would be vulnerable to crap being thrown up between wing and bulkhead - so decided to leave it pointing in engine bay - just make sure your exhaust don't leak or it will suck fumes into cabin!

more pics and wiring diagram to follow chaps.

Tidy job. Check your engine breather is connected to the carb, if it's just venting from the cap it'll get sucked in there and you'll come over all peculiar.

glad you mentioned that-cap is on but rattles, I checked and think a double seal thingy is missing!

I've thought about doing the same several times in the past. I'd be interested in how it stands up to the rigors of life in a Landy engine bay. Any idea of the increase in air volume rate over a standard S3 snail blower?

you might get stinky oil smells at idle if you don't duct it to outside.

also, have you rerouted your fuel lines to avoid vapour lock? pics of your fuel routing pls :)

it bolts to distributor base then up around thermostat... is that wrong?

no, just different to the one i'm fiddling with (series 2a). this one is attached to the first rocker cover bolt.

don't suppose you can also take a pic of your coil, where the middle king ht lead goes to. :)

edit: ahh i see it in another pic, the gold thing. hmm bugger the coil is in a different place in a 3 to a 2a. no wonder the ht leads i bought were too short for the king

To be honest its hard to judge, I would say its the same plus another 40%

Doesn't blow your socks off but its enough to cope with the side vents I installed on the dash to keep the side windows clear.
