Hello,

Can someone diagnose this:
My P38's CD player does not work (nothing new, but I'm now dealing with it). The magazine goes in and out happily, but when I select CD having pushed it it, it reads 'CD Check' for about 20 seconds before concluding 'No CD' in any of the slots. It's the original part, attached to the Harmon system.
I took the unit out and hit it with a CO2 fire extinguisher to blow out any cobwebs on the laser, to no avail. Anyone got any ideas? The boxes are rather cheap on eBay, but might it not be that that's broken?
Thanks!

As in turn it on and off at the wall?

You will have to take player out from its location. On the left hand side rear you will see the multi pin plug, that connects it to the system. Remove and replace that a few times. It is usually a bad connection on that. filling it with nice damp CO2 was not the best idea you ever had to be honest.

Well what it actually was was compressed air from a dental machine (ie sterile and dry) I just though people would relate to fire extinguisher more.

I did unplug it in order to take it out and do that to it. Since the satnav issue I waited ample time between ignition and connection and vice versa. What about a bit of WD40 in the plug?

If you want to knacker it altogether, use WD40 on electrics. It is a water dispersant and leaves an oily film. Just pulling the plug and working it in and out a few times usually does the trick.

OK, thanks I'll try that :)
One final question: what should the ignition status of the car be while I'm doing this?

TCubed, is it a Clarion or Alpine system?

If your changer is knacked (sounds like it is tbh, they don't last forever) I have a fully functional Clarion one sitting in my garage surplus to requirements, since I fitted an aftermarket HU to the H/K system. Let me know if you want it.

That's very kind of you, how much would you want for it? I had another look at mine to do as Wammers suggested (no impact whatsoever sadly), but couldn't find 'Clarion' or 'Alpine' anywhere on it.. where should I look?

Have you tried running an old-fashioned cleaning disc through it. You've probably got one hidden in your c.d. collection somewhere.

Clarion will have caa154 or 122 on the cd magazine, it will also have a PU number on the under side of the unit. I think it will be Alpine however!

If your HU looks like this:

It's the alpine one, and my CD changer won't work on your system.

If it looks like this:

It's the Clarion one and mine will work.

Only want £40 for it... If you want to drive to my place I'll fit it for you too.

Try dabbing the jionts on the mechanism with a light oil such as 3 in 1. Did it for me as had same message and it was the cassette mech that was stuck. Bazz.

I’ve had similar problems with my changer. It was all jammed up when I got it, one CD was selected across but wouldn’t play or reject.

Once I’d sorted that, see below, I found that the player wouldn’t always pick up all or some of the CD’s. I can tell if it’s going to work when the cassette is inserted – it goes through all six CD’s drawing them across spinning and ‘reading’ (?) them. You can see them down the right hand side of the cassette. If it doesn’t like the CD it just whirrs a bit but doesn’t draw them across. So reject time and reinsert the cassette. Once they seem to be picking up they play OK for some time but then a ‘no disc’ message starts coming up and they gradually stop working just skipping across to the next one until none work – reject time and start again.

As said above, mine came jammed up and has jammed again. I’ve no direct evidence but this was around the time I had battery problems and was disconnecting the battery. I suspect that a CD may have been ‘up the barrel’ and couldn’t reject itself quickly enough? I found that by taking the unit out, lifting the lid and pushing the black plastic gear round rejected the CD back into the cassette and it worked again. I’ve no firm linkage but the cassette seems to be more successful loading up if the engine is running although I accept it shouldn’t make a difference – when you’ve got a problem you’ll try anything!

Doesn’t help you directly with your problem but keep trying – that’s how we all learn the foibles and the work-arounds.
