A big thank you to Grit Valve for his help today..
Had posted a week or so ago that i was having trouble getting the viscous fan undone. True Grit offered his help and came through, not just with the viscous fan but the whole water pump change..

A point worth mentioning.
I purchased a BMW pully lock tool aka Laser 5591...
... which was most handy in allowing one of us to hold the pulley in place, while the other got some force on the VC fan spanner. it does make things a lot easier and with two people one holding the lock tool in place and the other on the spanner it get easier still. linking two spanners for the extra leverage is even more helpful when the bolt is locked up tight.
The lock tool also proved useful in undoing the pulley bolts as well.
