Did the rears, no problems one stuck slide pin, no issue a bit of a wiggle out it comes, clean up with some emery cloth, grease with copper slip no bother...done both within 30 minutes...

N/S front...another stuck slide pin, took at bit more wiggling and swearing to get it out, but once it is out and the pin and hole cleaned and greased, all is good.

O/S Front........AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH snapped the slide pin trying to wiggle it out, just a bit to much torsion and ping off she snapped...feck it.

OK don't panic, take the caliper bracket off........18 years of rust, ****e, grime and mud, those bolts are going nowhere fast.....copious amounts of penetrating fluid (I use Lever by Aztec Chemicals) and long breaking bar, correct size socket AND a two foot length of scaffold pole and the finally crack off, and I am a big chap but they took some leverage....think I may have pulled out my right shoulder mind as it is fecking agony at the moment though! Anywho...

so now I am sitting here with a snapped pin locked solid in the caliper bracket wondering what to do....

Might go to work and use one of the big vices to loosen the pin and get it out as I think there is more chance of getting slide pins tomorrow than a whole new bracket....retest is at 17:15 Friday evening!! (tomorrow)...

Front caliper carriers only cost £20, heck, new calipers themselves start at £33 - just replace everything with new! New front calipers carriers and pads will cost you about a ton. Why sod about with rusty old parts?

+1, and I would check the rear's as well, if the fronts are so bad:D

After 18 years, yes the lot could do with replacement that is for sure, but with the re-test this afternoon I had no time to wait around for delivery....

That along with 2 doctors appointments today, one for the girlfriend at 9.45 this morning and another for the 13 week old daughter at 12.10....

So heres what has happened so far:

After finishing the rears at 9.50pm by torch light last night, got cleaned up and jumped in the car and headed to work (we have a large workshop there) got to work by 23.45 opened up and set about getting the stuck snapped pin out of the caliper bracket...

Lots of penetrating fluid, a large vice to hold the end of the pin in, a number 4 Copper and Hide mallet.....grab the bracket and start trying to turn it while hitting it with the CnH to break it free...a few sharp whacks and it starts to move. Wiggle wiggle wiggle lots more Lever fluid, a few more whacks and hey presto, the pin is out!

This morning, I spoke with my friendly local main dealer who doesn't carry the pins on the shelf, they put me in touch with a LR service centre in Alton Hampshire - Keith Gott Land Rover - spoke with them and they had some pins on the shelf, so after the first doctors apt, we high tailed it to Alton (about 22 miles up the road) picked up the pins (STC1920 - £19.55) and then high tailed it back for the second apt. at 12.10....made it with 5 minutes to spare....

Summer had her injections (she now hates me!!) and back home for a spot of lunch then fit the pins ready for the re-test later this afternoon!

Update with the result later....also will update the battery clamp thread with details of the fabricated battery strap!
 
UPDATE:

All done and passed now.

Looking at the pipework, it wouldn't surprise me if it start to get advisories next year for them, so will start looking at the replacement process over the next few months and look to replace next spring.

In the mean time, next job on the P38 will be replacing some coolant hoses to the LPG vapouriser as they are looking old and cracking.

As for the L322, I have a radiator bottom hose to replace as this is weeping, have hose, just gotta get out there and fit it!

Well done!! I was worried that you wouldnt make it!!!! I currently have the 300tdi in bits due to a wiring problem for the wipers, the P38 intank pump has failed and the starter motor fell off and the TD5 waiting for a service. My daughter is 15months old and severely limits my tool time!!!

Should have limited your tool time 24 mths ago then you could fix your motors now. ;):D:D
