I have a new zenith IV fitted to a 2.25 petrol. It has been running OK with the exception of hard to start when engine is hot, but now it can not idle. There is thick black smoke from the exhaust. The spark plugs have built up black carbon.
I have played with the throttle adjustment screw and volume screw.
I can put the volume screw all the way in and the engine will still run. The throttle screw is all the way down- allowing me just enough to get a erratic idle and check my timing and ignition.
Choke is off, Vacuum hose to dizzy connected, Air breather is off. The screws holding the carb to the manifold are tight.
Ignition, timing seems ok, I thought it was the points at first so I just replaced that and the condenser. What now? Is there a way to adjust the fuel pump pressure (its mechanical type). Perhaps I need to check the float and needle. When I was playing with it yesterday I saw a pool of petrol sitting on top of the throttle flap.

On a side note, I used a volt / rpm / dwell timing light and it read 6-7 volts. I am not sure if it was reading that from the neg terminal on the coil where the green dwell was clipped or from the battery terminals. Any suggestions appreciated.
