I have a new zenith IV fitted to a 2.25 petrol. It has been running OK with the exception of hard to start when engine is hot, but now it can not idle. There is thick black smoke from the exhaust. The spark plugs have built up black carbon.

I have played with the throttle adjustment screw and volume screw.

I can put the volume screw all the way in and the engine will still run. The throttle screw is all the way down- allowing me just enough to get a erratic idle and check my timing and ignition.

Choke is off, Vacuum hose to dizzy connected, Air breather is off. The screws holding the carb to the manifold are tight.
Ignition, timing seems ok, I thought it was the points at first so I just replaced that and the condenser. What now? Is there a way to adjust the fuel pump pressure (its mechanical type). Perhaps I need to check the float and needle. When I was playing with it yesterday I saw a pool of petrol sitting on top of the throttle flap.

On a side note, I used a volt / rpm / dwell timing light and it read 6-7 volts. I am not sure if it was reading that from the neg terminal on the coil where the green dwell was clipped or from the battery terminals. Any suggestions appreciated.

What is rave?I also have a problem with my Zenith,it runs far to fast at tick over & cant be regulated, plugs looked ok last time i checked but getting 16mpg

check that the carb mounting base isn't warped, which lets air in making any mixture adjustments ineffective

Thanks all,
Mad hat man- What is the proper float leval? Do I just bend the tab that pushes on the needle to adjust? Thanks

This morning I checked the float and needle, Checked the mounting base, and replaced the gaskets down there. Put some compressed air and blew any dirt out. Put the zenith back on and tighted everything down. Still having the same problem.

I am thinking to try and fix up the old Zenith carb with a overhaul kit and see what that does. The only problem I had with that carb is fuel leaks out of the lower spindle and on to the hot manifold below, and hard to start when hot.

Is there anyway to lower the fuel pressure? I have a Series book that says to lower the fuel pump pressure but doesnt say how to. I think mine is mechanical.

Will post back.

Ok Mad Hat Man, I think your suggestion solved it for me. The float was at 29mm and I adjusted it to 33mm. -I learned something new. Another thing that is working again is the volume control screw. I guess the throttle butterfly flap needs to be cracked open at 1.4mm for idle/start on a zenith.

The motor let off a couple flames through the carb when engine braking after quick acceleration, so its off to the next issue. errrr Otherwise it has a nice idle with no black smoke.

Been working on getting the rave disc downloaded. @75% :)
