Your thoughts on the 2.5td 19j engine??

Bloody phone! That's abit more reassuring, I would be buying it with the plan to put a 200 in. Allong wth the disco tranny box. Think il go for it!

One thing I will say about my 19j, is that even as the pistons were melting, the head was cracking, and the oil was COMPLETELY emulsified with the coolant, it never actually stopped working. In fact I drove it to college for a whole week with it in this condition, and it performed exactly the same as it always had done. Of course it could have seized at any moment, but it never actually did.

Sounds like a bloody legendary engine to me!

Mucho legendry - yesterday i started making under bonnet black clouds and smelling really bad ...... that didnt stop me driving home - probably woulda driven it to work today if it didnt develope a loose wheel bearing on the way home yesterday !

Off to pick up a low milage disco 200tdi at weekend for a heart transplant - 2.5 td has now done 110k - was on 105k when i got it !! Still pulls decent dont have to down shift for inclines like people report. Im just getting morw and more breathing ! To the point where if i sit still for a couple of minutes people would think i am on fire !

My old 19jkept going for some time with 4 cracked pistons, it ran rough but kept running. It was a shame they were not fitted with an intercooler as this would have kept internal engine temp down and helped them last longer,a good mod for any still out there?

Erm... are you sure? I'm pretty sure that's not what an intercooler does! :)

I recon it would help! It will lower the temp in the cylinders and probably make it last longer, but it is probably just prolonging the death! I really wana put a disco transfer box on it, but I don't wana kill the engine fully! It will have to work too hard I think :-(

Its exactly what an intecooler does, cools the charge air after its been through the very hot turbo, this increases the density of the air going in the engine[so to get more in]and as an extra helps motor run cooler.

Great little injuns tbh, mine used to hit 85 on a slope on the motorway and sit at 60-70 with not many problems.

The biggest benefit you can do to it is to fit a 200/300Tdi radiator and intercooler, this helps eliminate the heat stress on the injun and gives you a good return on the fuel anorl.

The ally ladder section, direct injection and a reworked head are the only significant differences between the 19J and 200Tdi, everything else is basically the same ( oh i forgot the fuel injector, that's a better one for running veg oil on the 200Tdi )

If you wanna know how to fit an intercooler to a 19J give me a holler, i did a Landy cam on it a few months ago, you'll need a grinder and possible welder for the brackets, but other than that it cost me £15 for parts from the scrap yard.

19 J engine.
OK in my book trouble with any engine now is the timing belt why a go any place machine has a Rubber timing belt i do not know - it should have a timing chain or do as i did fit a Zeus timing kit. About 25 mpg not that good but it goes.
Air filter can get oily but i once fitted a high air intake.
Air filters lasted for ever.

timing belts on those were never an issue ,only bends push rods if they do go but i never seen many ,bore wear and piston crown splitting, cracked heads

I had a 19 ticker in mine when I first brought it and it was a little sluggish but I ragged the **** out of it and it never missed a beat! I thought it was bullet proof

229K Is fantastic mileage,,,Myns a 87 model and im only the second owner from new,its just clocked up 90k yesterday ive thought once or twice about the 200tdi conversion but think ill just hang fire and see how long the 19j lasts me.hopefully in this time the price of a 200tdi engine may have come down(hopefully):)

Thanks all:cool:
140 K on my one had her from new great bit of kit all said and done.

I couldn't really complain about mine, i went from Torquay to Newcastle n back in a weekend with 3 up and 6 barrels of veg oil ( used on the journey i might add! ) at a steady 55-60.
I have found that the turbo's crack under the heat produced, but fitting an intercooler ( 200Tdi rad & intercooler ) did improve the overall performance of the engine noticeably more.
If you have the patience and care to give the engines, then they can be solid work horses, the N/A was a good engine, add an intercooler is a sure fire way to extend it's life.
