Right

while doing another repair i looked down and spotted a large amount of oil seemiing to be colleting on drivers side of the sump guard

(i assume the IRD and auto gear box use a dif kind of oil as this def looks, feels and smells like engine oil)

thats a lot of oil lol mine you a small amount goes a long way!!!!
had a poke around and a bit of a clean up,def coming from oil pan area, ird and gear box seem fine for oil leaks

(i followed the pipe its the dip stick pipe lol)

yep put some cloth around it and no more oil ran down the oil filter

But do you all agree this looks what could well be the problem or is this common and going to be a pain in my ass lol

also i assume i will need to drop the oil, then take the oil sump completly off to fix this?

also i have no gasket to replace the old one if i take it off, will silicon gasket do the job down on the sump?

cheers
griff

It's not common for the KV6 to leak oil. They are actually very good at keeping oil in the block. It looks like one of the sump bolts is missing. I can see the recess in the sump near the oil filter. There are 2 holes there that should have bolts fitted. Has anyone taken the sump off, maybe before you got the car? It shouldn't leak a drop, let alone tip it out like it is.

There's no gasket for the sump. Some people use silicone RTV type sealant. While this would work, it's not correct. The sump joint should use an anaerobic sealant like Loctite 574.

Just watched the video again. To the left of the filter, there are 2 holes, both should have bolts fitted. Something has been going on with the sump. It needs investigation, asap.

There's no need to remove the sump for an oil change, that's for sure. Once it's removed, can you take a couple of pictures of the underside of the engine and of any debris you might find in the oil pickup gauze. It should be clean but i've found all sorts of foreign bodies in there. Also a picture of the oil would be useful too.

yes i no but was thinking maybe it was leaking when they did oil change so the garage tried to do a quick fix (and charge a fortune)

well anyway took the sumo off ,someone def had it off before i think ,luckly all the bolts where done up and the oil filter was tight (someone has cut the top engine mount bolt that connects to the sump rather than unbolting it )

and i found the leak !

(hopefully you can get this part ? i found a bit of it in the sump )

checked the pick up filter as well

for got to take a pic of the oil ,but it looks fine ,black and in need of a change i think but no water

Jet watered the sump to clean it up a bit, going to leave it to air dry tonight to ensure all water out of it

Ok so you need the dipstick socket. These are available from LR. I've had to replace a couple. People don't know how to release them so they get broken. If you can get a new socket, remove the dipstick tube (one bolt) before refitting the sump. Then once the sump is on, push the dipstick tube into the socket, then fit the bolt.

Ya before taking the sump off i read up on it and on correct way to remove the dip stick tube ,the one 8 mm bolt was a real pain to get to lol

any idea what the cost of the socket it

It's known as a Quick Release Connector. V6 Dip Stick. A long those lines anyway.
The part number is LYC100510L
The last one I bought was around a tenner sterling ;)

All sorted :0

sump clean
engine part clean (and refitted the filter thing)
loctight 574
all done :)
car running spot on ,with no oil leak :):):):)

BUT YET ANOTHER PROBLEM AHHHHHH NEW THREAD STARTED

Going by the inside of the engine lower block, I'd say it's skipped an oil change or two. If the oil is changed on time, the inside of the engine remains reasonably clean. Yours is black. I'm not convinced this poor Freelander was very well looked after.
