Disco 3 (LR3) Yellow Park light on and the auto trans shift is locked

D3 96 DV6 HSE auto diesel restoration. , Park brake drums serviced and set up in accordance with LR manual- works fine on the electric Pbrake switch works well both on and off. But the selector latching solenoid is not getting power(checked solenoid its ok on 12v) Fault on dash is auto park release fault consequently I use the finger unlatch.
I have done the earth connections in the engine compartment but the one on the drivers side (UK) under ABS pipes has no wires on it. I see from an earlier post that there is an earth closest to selector underneath the centre tunnel not done yet.

Two questions really- How to get auto park to auto unlatch ?
and where is the selector earth ?
 
Auto unlatch should release when in drive and accelerator pedal pressed, then it struggles for a nano second and then releases the park brake.
Iirc manual trans does not have the auto release feature.

Thanks for that but no change . I get park brake switch on and off, but its the selector that is stuck in Park and the knob push in button is locked. If could understand the Land Rover wiring diagram but it seems to me I am missing fine detail like where is the latching solenpoid earth and what fuse is it on. Any clues to find a good old fashioned wiring diagram? Thank you helpoing

If you go to the D3forum, and take a look at the top of their page for the Wiki (right under the number 3) section, I think there are wiring diagrams etc on there.
Not sure if you have to join to download stuff? lots of useful info on the site, most of the weird problems have been covered.

Also @gstuart on here likes his wiring diagrams, so might be able to help.

hi mate

it sounds like u may need to check the diagnostics setting for the EPB

there are also a large connector at the back passenger side wheel , these connectors are known to get ingress or water / dirt etc, best to take them apart, check all the pins and wires, spray with some electrical cleaner , reinstall, then see how u get on before having to delve deeper into the system

heres also a canbus test sheet , plse also ensure ur battery is fully charged , min with the engine off 12.6 Vdc

regarding the earth post there should be one tucked up at the back, passenger side near the A post u see the ABS pipes, it’s tucked well out the way


With both battery leads disconnected from the battery posts

Multimeter set to ohms, ( TP Is just short for test probe from ur multimeter )

TP to pin 6 other TP to pin 14, read ohms TP to pin 3 other TP to pin 11, read ohms


Reconnect battery, ign off , meter set to Vdc

TP to pin 6 other TP pin 4 Read Vdc

TP to pin 6 other TP to pin 5 Read Vdc

TP to pin 14 other TP to pin 4 Read Vdc

TP to pin 14 other TP to pin 5 Read Vdc

TP to pin 6 other TP to pin 14 read Vdc


Pin 16 will be your battery Positive

Ref the rear connector , the EPB wiring is in C0390/ C0376

on testing the wiring is best to use a test light as a multimeter can give u false readings , ie where the circuit isn’t under a load with a meter

C2590 - PARKING BRAKE MODULE base of passenger side footwell

C2598 parking brake switch , base of drivers side B pillar , near seat belt

C2603 ABS module , under ABS pipes near bulkhead tucked on the inner wing

plus the brake light switch is renowned for failing , plse ensure both ur brake lights are working correctly

I get the impression the op is actually suffering from the interlock circuit to get it out of “P”.

Think the title is a little misleading. :vb-confused2:

plus 1 as also wondered that, thought I would share the ground points first before starting to go into the interlock system , lol

might just be the case of a faulty brake pedal switch which sends the switched live over to the interlock motor , but normally ( not always ) the brake lights won’t work , or the complete gear lever assembly is required

seen that a few times as well , ie, there’s a sunroof or something has been spilt

with the application of the brake pedal should hear the interlock motor through the gear stick, easiest to use a multimeter on the interlock whilst pressing the brake pedal or using diagnostics that has the bi directional facility

indeed time will tell as the OP goes through the system

Many thanks guys - loads to go on . C2603( under ABS pipes) earth stud has no wires on it and no obvious loose connector nearby. Should the transmission casing have an earth strap to it that could be missing ? On this selector its a solenoid and that clicks but not so operating brake pedal so thats the first call I think to check the brake switch. Thanks again.
