Freelander 1 Yellow hdc light on and gear box wont go past fourth gear.

Hi guys,

I have a 2005 freelander diesel automatic.

As I was getting out my car last night I dropped my coffee and in order to wipe it up properly I moved the gear stick down into first. When I left the car I forgot to put it back into park.
I got back in this morning and now the yellow hill decent control light is on and when i'm driving in any gear there is an F and a 4 alternatively flashing on the ODO metre.

Have I messed something up by leaving it in first gear over night?
