Good day

I hope someone have some advice that can help us. We have a 2006 Freelander 1 TD4 auto. We were driving with our Freelander for about 20km a few days back. Stopped at the robot pulled away and when the car needed to go into 4th gear it showed the HDC light as well as F4 flashing. When you switch it off it clears but as soon as it needs to select 4th gear it goes into limp mode but it definitely only selects 3rd gear. Even with manual mode it does the same.

We have done a diagnostic on the car which shows P0758 Shift solenoid B short circuit to battery or ground. We did the resistance test which did measure correctly. We did check continuity on the wires to the computer box that seems fine. The barrel connectors is in great shape and does lock up perfectly. Any advice would be appreciated.

We did clear it and rechecked it. Just wondered as the solenoid tests right according to the ohm test but we are busy looking for a solenoid.

Hi Nodge68 we did put a new solenoid we still get the same hdc and F4 if you have any idea I would love to hear as we are completely out of ideas. Thank you for the help.

...P0758 Shift solenoid B short circuit to battery or ground...

Are the wires in the auto's wiring harness dagamed, allowing then to short to metalwork in the engine bay? Look for broken insulation showing the metal wire inside.

Hi Hippo not as far as we could find. My husband had a stroke last year and still struggles to be his old self if I can call it that so he just don't have the energy he used to have for fault finding so I organized with a I guy that works on the freelanders to have a look for the fault. We believe it is something electrical just impossible to find. I learned heaps from your posts as well as the other posts but must admit I can't find a post where someone has experienced this exact same problem. The car still changes gear extremely smooth it just refuses to change to 4th gear and stays in 3rd.

That's a very strange issue.
I'm thinking it's a wiring fault, or maybe an internal fault with the TCM?
You could replace the TCM just to eliminate it, they are often very cheap on ebay (hear in the UK anyway), but you do need one from the same chassis number range, which is helpfully printed on the label.

The guy replaced a shift solenoid(which one I am not sure will hear when we see him) and now the car changes through all the gears until the oil warms up after 20min of driving and then shows f4 again. He says his computer shows a fault in the gearbox and he will sent the codes to me so will follow up tomorrow. We are in South Africa and here the parts are extremely expensive and very scarce to find. But I must admit I still love the car it drives extremely well.
