Yard find value?

Hi guys,

Not posted in this ection before but I drop by to see how builds are getting on etc from time to time.

Now I spotted something interesting a few months ago, and I get that itch every time I pass it. On my way to a favourite strolling spot of mine I walk past a house with lots of bits and bobs outside in the yard. One of these bobs is a Series II under a partial tarp! It looks like it hasn't moved in decades, and I fear that the owner probably isn't fussed about its fate. I have no doubt that it's in terrible shape, but it seems a real tragedy to leave it rotting there.

I was thinking of making him an offer for it, and either garaging it for the time being (planning a Fender rebuild currently) or if I fall in love with it rebuild it first!

So I'm wondering what sort of value it has, juding by the state I'd say not much. I haven't got up close but from what I can see the body panels are all there and there is no serious damage. I've no doubt it would be a total long haul rebuild but what fun it would be!! So, any ideas of what kind of limit I should put on my offer? To begin with I'll probably offer him peanuts and to trailer it away with no hassle but I might need to make a better offer . But it'd just be good to know where the value tops out.

Hmm, well, f it is a series II, it will be tax exempt, and if he has the V5 for it, or at least the reg details, this would bump the price up instantly, no matter what the rest of it looks like! Wihout knowing the complete condition of it, it would be very difficult to make an estimate, but offer around £250-300 and see how he goes with it, just a ball park figure to be honest though!

Hmm tax exempt. Mucho gusto! It doesn't look like the kinda place which keeps V5's neatly filed but who knows might surprise me! I can definitely afford that and most series bits look cheap as chips!!!!

Yep...start at scrap value (as Devonlad says, 250/300) but be prepared to go to about £500 if the documentation is available.

Seems a real shame to just leave it there, a restored S2 is a thing of true beauty! Even if they is drafty old collie carriers !

Did you say you could hire a trailer for £35 a day mate? Might come in handy !

I did! You need a grown up licence tho! One with Granddad rights and things! Did I mention I've got a Sankey trailer? Series 2 won't fit in it but its cool none the less

Guys, say if he doesn't have the paperwork will I have to re-register the car? Will it lose its tax exempt status?

Does it really matter? With what it will cost to rebuild.. and then the running costs...what's another couple of hundred! :hysterically_laughi

my reasons for wanting a road tax free vehicle are nothing to do with the actual cost of it, i have 2 series rovers which are not everyday cars, i can only drive one car on the road at a time, might be fun trying to drive an rhd and lhd at the same time.

the rovers do little annual mileage, i only have one car parked on the road at one time why should i pay more than once.

not trying to light any blue touch papers here

it might be worth checking that chassis number isn't on a current vehicle if he doesn't have the paperwork. It wouldn't be the first ringed series.

Cheers guys. If I were to do it I think it would be time for a 200tdi chassis and Disco transmission - might as well make it reasonably good to drive .

Well I doubt it's going anywhere so I'll do some more reading around and look at known costs. It's hard to tell but I think it might be cheaper than a defender rebuild which is a big plus.

Is it near the bird sanctuary

I know a guy who would move it for a small fee

Haha yeh that's the one ! Seen it before have you? I have no idea if the owner would be open to offers but hey you don't ask you don't get . It's been there as long as I've been here - so two years under a tarp at least. DD can tow it with his D2 and a trailer, it's just a question of a. whether the owner will part with it and b. whether I really want to take on such an expensive and demanding project.

I have a garage that I rent for storage so could plonk it there until I figure out what to do with it. At least it would be out of the rain! But DD and I really need somewhere to work on projects that's a bit bigger - hence my barn fred in AG .
