Hi, I am new to the forum although a fairly seasoned LR enthusiast with a previous Lightweight rebuild. Currently I run a 2008 Defender 110 xs station wagon and am restoring a series 2A 88.
I stripped the engine and had it rebored etc and new camshaft bearings. However, I am not sure what the threaded hole at the rear end of the camshaft is for. Have I forgotten something when I took it apart or is it simply there to help balance the shaft?

First welcome :).

So which engine? I guess we are talking the 2a?
Pics help alot , but am sure somebody will grasp what you are asking.
It isn't me:oops:.

We like pics of the whole process. well actually we just like pics of LRs:).

It’s a standard two and a quarter petrol. I was wrong the hole is not threaded. Therefore I am assuming that end of the camshaft just gets the cover plate.

In fact the hole is not threaded. I am assuming the rear camshaft cover seals that end and the front thrust bearing holds it in position.

Yup, confirmed by the parts book. Did you get the camshaft bearings in ok? I ended up getting a bit of tube turned down to do mine - after a couple of fails trying the easy way!

It mentions it 12-3, also in the turners articles which I found very useful when rebuilding mine

But also aware you can get them “pre reamed” ready to use
I didn’t change mine as they looked fine, but note the text mentions really important to get the oil hole in shell lined up correctly

Mine didn't (from Turners).
I suspect that is why the hole is there - to align shaft. Problem was I had been abroad for two months in between and had forgotten how it looked on removal - needless to say the one photo I did not take 🥴
