The XEDi engine is called the L-series and it was made by Rover. It was also used in such exotic cars as the Montego!
It has a reputation for logevity and being bombproof.

I thought the Montego & Maestro ran the Perkins Prima diesel engine, or is XEDI / L-Series just another name for the perkins?

the l-series was used in the 220/420/620SD

Dead right Blippie. And used in LDV vans. Do a search for Tinytdi to see what mileage he's on, but 160k+ isn't unusual.
