Good afternoon Ladies and Gents,

Looking at getting a freelander this weekend as I now have to go the back roads to work to a new job, and I'm fed up of my current car with low profiles getting smashed to bits, just looking at a chugger to get about in, only used to go back and forward to work in so not that fussy about performance now.

Not looking for a Disco, before you say it, to big for what I need....

So what are the highs and lows?

Both that I am looking at have 100K+ on the clocks

Both have cam belt changes, the EXdi had one 34K ago and the TD4 40K ago, so that will need changing, I hope a friend of mine can do it on the cheap being a land rover mechanic.

After reading through a few bits the EXdi seems to hold up a little better, going to be doing about 400 miles a week in it.

No doubt after driving for a week I will be asking how to get some more power out of it, coming from 180bhp to below 100bhp.

Thank you in advance:D

regards

Unless I and several others are mistaken the TD4 doesn't have a timing belt, it has a chain. The EX I believe is the older version (up to year 2000 ish??) therefore not so many around. Have someone who knows (mechanic friend) look over them both and query the sellers knowledge of what exactly has been done with the TD4 "timing belt". It'll be a good answer. There are plenty around so don't jump in too quickly. I wouldn't go performance tweaking a 100k+ mile Freelander, they are surprisingly agile enough on the open road already.

Cheers buddy, what’s the difference in the engine and gearbox?

Was in a whole new engine? Or just updated?

Was the XEdi taken from something else? As I se a few TD4’s around.

As far as I'm aware, although don't quote me the gearbox was improved too in 2001. The TD4 engine is BMW as opposed to the Land Rover engine. It has to mean something when a big company replace their own engine with someone else's. There are plenty other threads on this site saying TD4 TD4 TD4 rather than the older diesel and never the petrol ones due to their servicing needs and (un)reliabilty.

L series against TD4

Less power

Less refined

Noiser etc etc

But when serviced properly is almost bullet proof and will run for ever (well almost) I understand from what ive read, the L series was derived from an old perkind diesel and was used in things like the sherpa vans !!

if it does go wrong, usually easy to fix and cheaply, where as generally TD4 being BMW will be more expensive to fix.

Both still suffer the usual, non engine related problems !!!

I'll be grabbing a XEdi on that note then. dont mine doing the servicing my self, we will see what the weekend brings.
