Hey Guys . .

My petrol 1.8 gaylander has died. This time the head gasket has gone. I suspect the engine has ceased.

I am now looking at replacing with an Xedi, and keeping the petrol for parts like the IRD and many other little bits n pieces. I mean, the IRD is only a week old.

Is this worth a shot ? i.e Buying the Xedi ?

I'd recommend an Xedi, had no problems with my engine and if you want to go down the veggie route it's the best choice of freelander. Had the normal freelander probs, IRD (replaced), leaking door seal (fixed with silcone sealant), antiroll bar link arm worn (£18 for a new one), window operating wire broke, window wiper linkage worn. If you have a good IRD it may be worth trying to source a hippo with a duff IRD and change it over, could end up getting a cheap motor!

Yanick you're having no luck with that wagon of yours.

Is this anything to do with a coolant loss incident?

The L-series is a good option, check out the faults poll

hi
i've had an xedi now for almost a year and the engine is fantastic-no problems and plenty of go. ave been running it on veg oil(new from tesco!) at upto a 60%mix wiv no probs at all-think it may even run better wiv some veg oil in!
all i've done is change oil and all the filters and taken the inside out of the cat/particle filter which makes it rev quicker and more freely and probably also gives a bit more power.
hope this is of some help

I know I know. Tell me about it. The confusing thing is that I really like these cars despite their faults. I'm worried about getting burnt if I buy another one.

Well. I have a feeling it has something to do with an idiot mechanic that I took it to. He bled the coolant system, and said the misfire / skipping was due to a failing head gasket. He put a product in - Something similar to Chemiweld. I assumed this would fix, at least temporarily, rather than cause damage to the car. Allot of smoke was comming from the exaust. . .

Yes. And It did lose coolant . . . But if this is the case, perhaps the head gasket is responcible. I thought maybe the chemiweld fluid, might have formed into a clump and blocked the cooling system somewhere ?

The car will not even start at all now. If it doesn't start, is this because the computer is not allowing it, or because the engine has ceased up ?

The other thing, is that now, after learning this car - i'd like to stick with what I know. I'm one of those types, who develops a sense of reliability from knowing the car well. But then again, I'm starting to think that I chose the wrong model. . .

Saying that - The freelander has all those things that I like : Its not a Heavy car like the RAV 4. Has more ground clearance than the Subaru Forrester, Has a nicer Shape than the Suzuki Vitara, so. . .they came in with a blitzer with the freelander : but just created a mechanical monster nightmare along with it.

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from freelander
You're so bushed and ceased I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I replaced the IRD
Then replaced the HT's for the first time
And this time it moves for real
I replaced the HT, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in rove.

It's strange but it's true
Hey, I can't get over the way you drive me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I drive out that door
Oh how I need to be free, Landy
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to brake free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you in my drive
Now I need a new loan, hey
God knows, got to walk it on my own
So Landy can't you see
I've got to brake free

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free
Ooh yeah
I want to break - yeah eah

yeah yeah. Its broken alright.

Yanick,
If I was buying a GL again, I'd get an Xedi first choice, with a TD4 a close second. As Mingey sez, ferget about the engin, they're stellar mileage bulletproof lumps wiv loadsa spares from Rover 220/420/620 (same lump). Its basically a Rover version of an original Perkins lump, which sez it all. Chassis/transmission/electrics faults yer know all about, same fer all GL's.

300% better than a 1.8/V6 anyday.
