Hello,

Place who serviced my l322 4.4 v8 with ZF 5HP-24 gearbox has used MULTI VEHICLE FULLY SYNTHETIC ATF FLUID.

Is this fluid the wrong one? Ever since they serviced it, the gearbox gets stuck around 2-3-4-5 gears when hot. When the car is cold it works perfectly fine.

No gearbox codes and no transfer box failure messages on dash.

Should I get it serviced with ESSO LT 71141.

Thank you.

Very much te wrong fluid.....

it HAS to be LT71141 as the 5HP24 used on the L322 uses a lock up clutch that modulates pressure to limit torque converter slip to around 3% to dampen engine vibration instead of the more usual damped flywheel or similar arrangement.....the LT71141 has the right friction modifiers in it to take this constant slippage and TQ wear factor into account.

Get it changed ASAP before it trashes your box!

Ok thank you. Would you recommend me to change the gearbox filter again. Service was done 800 miles ago. How many litres of the stuff should I buy?

Not strictly necessary to change the filter, but peace of mind would say to do so.

An empty box will take around 11 litres, but if you just drain what is in the sump then 6-7 litres as the rest will still be in the torque converter.

only issue with just a sump drain is you only get about 60-odd % out and changed...still leaving old/wrong fluid in the box which will get diluted with the right stuff....you will then have to do a couple more drain and refills to get a good dilution of a majority of right fluid against wrong fluid.

LT71141 is quite expensive - LR is around £15-16 a litre, I get mine from an Audi dealer (same fluid different bottle) at about £11 a litre....you can try Opie Oils, I think it is about £12 a litre...some places will do a 20 litre drum too....search the 'net.

There is something called a megaflush which is a machine that draws all the old liquid out and replaces it with all new correct fluid....I normally don't advocate a megaflush as it can lead to new fluid syndrome as LT71141 (like most ATF's) is a very good detergent and will strip all sorts of harmless deposits buried in harmless corners of the box and contaminate the new fluid with debris, which can cause premature wear on the components.

But, I would rather risk the low chance of New Fluid Syndrome compared to the wrong fluid.

Although it says LT71141 - it also says Dexron III which is totally not the right stuff...LT71141 is a straw colour and smells of fish!! DexIII is red!

Take it back to them and get them to do it FOC, unless they want to pay for a new gearbox. Show them Saints post's, it will need more than one oil change:)

There is a little bit more information here on the competitions website, the post from the legendary RRPhil is the bit to read and we all know him as Bemble on here so it doesn't hurt to link to them. Saint is his understudy :)

Transmission slipping!!!

Really as already said i would be taking it back to be done properly, if they have any doubt they can contact ZF who will tell them exactly what Saint and others have posted, absolutely nothing other than the correct product will work.

This is where I purchased mine from -
Mobil ATF LT 71141 Automatic Transmission Fluid

I can't fathom why you'd want to try to sort out the mess caused by the garage - it's their responsibility and the flush/refill should be at their cost.
